Matoi is located on the second floor of a building on Kaminarimon-dori, which is a busy street with traditional Japanese rickshaws.  You can get to this cafe by walking for 30 seconds from Kaminarimon in Asakusa.  The red traditional Japanese umbrella showing through the big window is the easy to find landmark.  A surprising fact about this cafe is that is has been running since 1884.  With a simple and tranquil atmosphere, you can lay back and rest your body after walking around many busy sightseeing spots.  What’s more, the amazing sweets and maccha green tea, that have been delighting customers for a long time, will recharge your energy.

The inside of the cafe is completely non smoking because the cafe wants customers to fully enjoy the aroma of maccha.  The cafe specifically buys maccha from Uji, Kyoto.  After receiving your order, a staff will make a cup of maccha green tea for you with great attention, using the same methods in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.  The maccha is generously used for other sweets as well.  Although you’re not a big fan of maccha, it is worth it to try their maccha latte because you can enjoy both the rich flavor of maccha and the modest sweetness of the milk.  After your rickshaw ride, why don’t you have a break at this cafe?

If you’re a maccha lover, order Maccha-zukushi.  You can get a dessert bowl called anmitsu that has maccha ice cream, a bowl of maccha jelly with two different types of roasted soybean flour and also comes with a cup of maccha green tea that is full of rich aromas.  There are other wonderful sweets that you can enjoy such as Wasanbon-pudding-anmitsu, which uses wasanbon (Ultra High Quality Japanese sugar).

One of Matoi’s popular sweets is kakigori, which is one of the typical summer sweets in Japan.  The combination of satisfying sweetness and chilly shaved ice will instantly make you forget how hot it is outside!  The vivid contrast of syrup and pure white shaved ice is very photogenic.  It would be a perfect set for warm and freshly made maccha green tea.
