The “Tokimeki Awa Tabi~The Awa Tradition Experience~” is an event coming from Tokushima, aiming to spread the tradition of “awa”, which originates from an old Tokushima name. In this event, you can discover and learn about Tokushima’s attractions such as the “Awaodori”, which is one of Japan’s three great dances, “Indigo Blue”, which was the color used in the Tokyo Olympic Logo of its elegance, the traditional puppel show, the “Awa Japanese Puppet Show”, and traditional crafts such as the Otani-yaki. If you are going to Shikoku during this time, by all means visit Tokushima!

Must-see! Suitengu Firework Festival – 21 July

The “Suitengu Firework Festival” is a festival held at the Suitengu shrine located in Kameyama Park. It is an emotional firework show in which the colorful fireworks reflect onto the waters of Osu, also known as the town of water. The reverberations of the fireworks echoing throughout the neighboring mountains are also unique to Osu, and about 1500 fireworks such as the Niagra are launched, creating an elegant summer view. Watching the fireworks in the boats of the Hijikawa River where the cormorant fishing boats come and go, would be another attraction of the festival. You can enjoy Japan’s summer in an extremely luxurious manner. Don’t miss out on the gorgeous fireworks that reflect on the torii gate of the Suitengu Shrine.

1. Zentsuji Festival – 22 to 23 July

The “Zentsuji Festival” is held at Zentsu-ji Temple, which is home to the famous monk Kukai, and is a festival where you can see the traditional dance of Shikoku called Yosakoi. Several local dance groups participate and about 2000 people dance around the city within the 2 days. The dances in front of the lit up Goju-no-tou is extremely beautiful. The final day is the “Total Dance Contest”, and each team perform an elaborate, charming dance. They are planning on having a firework show in support of the event, as well as many food stands, and this festival is loved by the locals and is enjoyable to both children and adults.

2. Shougakuin Summer Festival – 16 July

The “Shougakuin Summer Festival” has a history of 1300 years, and it is held at Seikakuin temple, also known as “Yamadera-san”. There are events such as the ritual in which the mountain priests prays for good health and safety in front of a large pot full of boiling water, as well as the “Fire Crossing” ceremony in which the mountain priests blow into their conch horn and tap their staff while chanting the sutra to burn away desire and catastrophe, allowing you to experience of world of solemnity.

3. Uwajima Ushioni Festival – 22 to 24 July

The “Uwajima Ushioni Festival” is a festival held by the city of Uwajima, and the festival is filled with events such as the dance event, “Gaiya Carnival”, fireworks show, Uwajima dance, Ushioni Parade, and a bull fighting contest. The highlight of the festival is the Ushioni Parade, in which a “Ushioni”, which are bulls, 5~6m in length, are decorated with a long neck, demon mask, sword tail, and palm hair, parade around. It is definitely worth seeing. The “Ushioni” is held by several men, and with the guidance of the flutes played by children, the bull sticks its head into each house to ward off evil. The “Ushioni” vary in size and shape, and it’s power astonishes anyone viewing the sight.

4. Shimanto Citizens Festival – 29 July

The “Shimanto Citizens Festival” is a two day festival held by an executive committee of citizen volunteers, and it consists of events such as the “Nakamura Dance Parade” and “Shimanto Lanterns Stand Parade”. People are especially committed to the Lanterns Stand Parade, and various lit lanterns unique to each team entertain the viewer’s eyes. The heroic parade of the lantern stands, as well as the performances shown during the parade makes the lantern stand parade a must-see.
