Tohoku region consists of six prefectures: Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata and Fukushima. There are lots of nature, lakes, and ski areas. So that this region is also popular among foreign tourists. Besides there are many traditional culture, festivals,
historical temples or shrines. This time we’ll show you events which held at Tohoku in June. Your journey to Tohoku will be more fun.

1. Tanoshimube! Festival

Tanoshimube! Festival is a popular festival in Rokkashomura, Aomori in spring. In 2018, it will be held in summer. Annual fireworks with sound and a laser show, kids’ marathon,
“Nagaimo (Chinese yam) Shōchū (Japanese distilled beverage) - Rokushu Special “lottery,
performances and others. A festival to enjoy for children to adults.
Near this park, there is a Rokkasho Village Museum which collect, organize, preserve activities of local materials and you can learn from permanent exhibition about archeology, nature, history and folklore or special exhibition, active learning. Besides there is a spa house “Rocca-pocca” where you can enjoy an open air bath surrounded by beautiful nature of Rokkamura or enjoy massage, karaoke, restaurant, and others. After enjoying the event, do some sightseeing!

2.Furukawayaoyaichi

400 years of traditional morning market”Furukawayaoyaichi” in Furukawa Osaki.
They sell rice, vegetables and other agricultural products and seasonal products of the Osaki area. You can buy vegetables, seedlings, wild plants, seafood, tea, bamboo works,
clothes, toys and many other things. Origin of this market dates back to 1604, “Onniichi(market)” was allowed to be held on the days with 3 and 7 at the end. Later the market was also held in Tokamachi. Because of that Furukawa was developed as a center of trade. Onniichi was held till around 1880 .Then in 1887 moved to Uramachi dori( Currently Uramachi ) and it continues till today . Around this market, there is a Kejyonuma Dam museum where you can have a nice view of Kejyonuma or you can learn about dam and registered Ramsar Convention Kejyonuma.

Special exhibition “trompe-l'oeil art 〜Escher,Dali,Shigeo Fukuda〜” being held at
Morohashi museum of modern art. At this exhibition, you see works of Salvador Dalí
(1904 - 1989)M.Escher( 1898~1972 ) famous for his Trompe-l'œil art and Japanese graphic designer who called “Japanese Escher” Shigeo Fukuda (1932-2009). You can enjoy trompe-l'oeil art which express dream and infinity. Morohashi museum of modern art has about 350 in total sculptures, paintings, prints of Spanish master, Salvador Dalí.
This museum opened as the third museum for permanent exhibition of Dalí., following Dalí Theatre-Museum (Figueres ,Spain) and Salvador Dali Museum (Florida USA ).Especially Dalí.’s 37 works of sculptures are unique collections in the world. Let’s have a look at the unique collection of this museum.

Event for traditional cultural experience and learn history

4.Teashikannon matsuri

The festival is held at Okihabajinja shrine. Okihabajinja shrine worships kannon called “Haba no teashikannnon” ,kannon for hands and foots. People of this area believe in this kannon from long ago. At this festival the main shrine is open for public. Many people visit this shrine to pray for a long life, marriage, healthy growth. You see Gypsum, crutches at this shrine. Worshipers brought them to pray for the recovery of damaged or sore limbs.
Yokote city where Okihabajinja shrine is located, has lots of sightseeing spots. For example, “Michi no eki (roadside station)” Jūmonji where you can buy fresh local agricultural products by that it’s busy with local people. ”Kamakurakan” where you see a ”kamakura (igloo)” in the huge refrigerator and you can experience kamakura.”Uchigura in Masuda” You can visit beautiful uchigura (warehouse) of the Hinomaru brewery. You also can taste sake here. Let’s enjoy this festival, sightseeing and try out the local sake!

5.Sōmanakamurajinja shrine Gosengusai

“Gosengusai” is held at Sōmanakamurajinja shrine .On June 15 the shrine ritual is only for the participants. On June 16 horse-riding cavalcade ride around the city and “Ohamakudari” is held at beach. “Ohamakudari” is a ceremony to dedicate water to mikoshi( portable Shinto shrin). On June 17, Children’s parade is held.
In this Sōmanakamurajinja shrine, Haiden( worship hall) and the honden,(main sanctuary)Heiden (offerings hall) are designed as an important cultural properties of Japan in 1983. This shrine is “gongen-zukuri” structure in which the Haiden( worship hall) and the honden,(main sanctuary) Heiden (offerings hall) are interconnected under the same roof. Though the building is simple, you can find decorative lacquered, metal fittings. Architecture representative of Sōma area. Let’s have a look at this architecture and festival.

6. Higashizawa rose garden Rose festival

Higashizawa rose garden is a beautiful park with the largest collection of roses in Japan and three lakes. It opened in 2002. There are about 750 kinds of 20000 roses from the world are blooming at about 7 hectares of park. As roses representing this park, original rose of Murayama city “Murayama”, symbol of peace “peace”, old and valuable variety “violet”.
Good months to see roses are from early June to late September. During the best months, Rose festival with many events is held. In October 2001, this rose garden was certified the “fragrance landscapes 100 Selection (in Japan)” by Ministry of the environment. In April 2015, this garden was also certified as lover’s sanctuary. Let’s have a wonderful time at such romantic place.

7. Michinoku Lakewood National Government Park

            Poppy Festival 2018

In early summer, 2 million of color of red, pink poppies are blooming at Michinoku Park
(Michinoku Lakewood National Government Park) on the background of the Zao forest with the remaining snow. Poppy festival is held during this beautiful season. During this festival, event “Michinoku Green Thumb Story “which related to flowers, nature, culture
is held. Michinoku Park is the only one National Government Park in Tohoku region. You can see flowers and also you can experience the climate and culture of the Tohoku region. In this park there are “Home Village (a large collection of old houses displaying the distinctive history, natural features, traditions and cultures of the six prefectures in the Tohoku region)”” Multipurpose grassland”” Dog Park” ”Game park” where you can enjoy BBQ ”warasuko hiroba (little kids playground)”where children and adults can enjoy roller slide, inline skates, disc golf, 3on3street basketball, boat and others.
