sightseeing spot Published: Oct 21, 2024

Located in Taito Ward, Ueno is a popular area filled with various tourist attractions like the Ueno Zoological Gardens, museums, lush parks, and even charming izakayas beneath the train tracks. Its convenient transportation makes it a favored place to stay for visitors.

Ueno boasts many notable destinations such as the Ueno Zoological Gardens, the National Museum, and Ameyoko, a lively market street frequented by both tourists and locals alike. The retro streets of Ueno are home to a mix of old-fashioned cafes and stylish modern ones.

This time, we’ll be introducing EVERYONE's CAFE, a trendy cafe nestled within the expansive Ueno Park. From its beautiful, blending wooden structure to the dishes made with fresh ingredients sourced locally from Tokyo, there’s plenty to love about this spot.

EVERYONE's CAFE: A Trendy Cafe Immersed in Nature in Ueno Park

EVERYONE's CAFE is located in the Takenodai Square of Ueno Park, offering visitors a chance to relax and enjoy their meals in a natural setting surrounded by trees and lush lawns.

Both the indoor and terrace seating areas feature extensive use of wood, creating a bright, natural atmosphere. With 82 seats inside and 84 on the terrace, it's a wonderful spot to dine outdoors on pleasant days.

The cafe is conveniently situated near many cultural facilities such as the National Museum of Nature and Science, Ueno Zoological Gardens, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. It’s the perfect place for a break during your sightseeing adventure.

Additionally, they offer colorful vegan menus featuring Edo vegetables, and fluffy soufflé pancakes made with Tokyo milk. The cafe even provides kids' menus with toys and drinks, making it a family-friendly destination.

The morning menu is perfect for a pre-sightseeing energy boost, with options like toast with avocado dip, eggs sunny-side up, and salads. For those with a sweet tooth, don’t miss out on their rich soufflé pancakes made with locally sourced Tokyo milk.

EVERYONE's CAFE stays open until 9 PM every day, making it a great place for dinner or an evening coffee.

The area transforms in the evening, with streetlights and illuminated fountains creating a magical, dreamy atmosphere that’s distinct from the daytime scene.

One of my personal recommendations is to take a leisurely evening walk through Ueno Park and stop by EVERYONE's CAFE to enjoy a freshly brewed herbal tea made with Tokyo-grown herbs. It’s the perfect way to unwind and forget about the hustle and bustle of the big city.

If you're visiting Omotesando Hills, be sure to check out EVERYONE's CAFE for a relaxing retreat in nature while still being in the heart of Tokyo.

More than half of the 166 seats are outdoors, allowing guests to enjoy the spacious park atmosphere and the greenery that surrounds the cafe.

Ueno Park is famous for its seasonal beauty—cherry blossoms in the spring, verdant trees in the summer, and vibrant autumn leaves that turn the area into a stunning fall scene. EVERYONE’s CAFE provides the perfect spot to savor your meal while enjoying the seasonal transitions.

Six Must-See Spots Inside Ueno Park Near EVERYONE’s CAFE

Ueno Zoo

Opened in 1882, Ueno Zoo is Japan's first zoo. It spans two sections, the East Garden and West Garden, and houses around 3,000 animals from approximately 300 species. The zoo’s exhibits are designed to replicate the animals' natural habitats, allowing visitors to observe them as they behave in the wild. The giant pandas, living in an area modeled after Sichuan Province in China, are particularly popular.

My personal recommendation is the Japanese Animal Area, where you can see animals native to Japan, like the Japanese serow, with the historical Old Kaneiji Five-Storied Pagoda as a backdrop.

The Tokyo National Museum is one of Japan’s oldest museums, established in 1872. It holds over 120,000 items of historical and cultural significance, which are exhibited in six different halls: the Main Building, Heisei-kan, Toyo-kan, The Gallery of Horyuji Treasures, Kuroda Memorial Hall, and Hyokei-kan.

As the museum offers extensive exhibits, visitors with limited time can follow suggested courses from the official website, such as the “Architecture Tour” or the “Buddha Statues Tour”. The museum buildings themselves are also architecturally impressive, making it worth focusing on the structure.

Opened in 1926, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum is Japan's first public art museum. The building, which spans five floors (three basement and two above ground), houses four exhibition rooms for open-call displays and three galleries showcasing various artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and photography.

A personal favorite of mine is the outdoor sculptures scattered throughout the museum. These sculptures, located mainly on the first floor, provide a unique experience as you tour the exhibition rooms. The museum also has a cafe, courtyard, and museum shop, offering visitors a place to relax after enjoying the art.

Established in 1877, the National Museum of Nature and Science consists of two buildings: the Japan Gallery and the Global Gallery. The Japan Gallery houses exhibitions on the formation of the Japanese archipelago and the development of the Japanese people, while the Global Gallery covers Earth's diverse life forms and human evolution.

One must-see spot is the "Animals of the Earth" section on the 3rd floor of the Global Gallery. The lifelike animal and bird taxidermy makes visitors feel as if they've stepped into a real-life encyclopedia.

Kaneiji Temple, founded in 1625 for the peace of the government and people, was once an expansive temple covering much of what is now Ueno Park and Shinobazu Pond. Today, only a smaller area near the Tokyo University of the Arts remains part of Kaneiji. The temple grounds offer a serene space, with the impressive temple buildings and seasonal scenery providing a peaceful retreat.

Visitors can also explore historical structures like the Kiyomizu Kannondo and the Tokugawa Estate Mausoleum spread throughout the park. It's a delightful experience to follow these sites and uncover the history of Kaneiji.

Ueno Toshogu Shrine, built in 1627, is located in Ueno Park. Originally part of Kaneiji Temple, the shrine now stands as a separate entity. Its stunning golden architecture, reminiscent of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, is designated as a national cultural asset. The shrine enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, offering blessings for success, victory, and health.

The Peony Garden within the shrine grounds is also a must-visit spot, where a variety of peonies bloom beautifully. It's a peaceful area for lovers of traditional Japanese gardens and flowers.
