Kojo: A Historic Ueno Coffee Shop Established in 1963

Kojo is a long-established, upscale coffee shop in Ueno with about 60 years of history. Located just a 2-minute walk from Ueno Station, the shop is situated in a basement level.

The name "Kojo" (meaning "old castle") is derived from ancient European castles, and the interior is decorated luxuriously to evoke the atmosphere of a medieval European castle.

Particularly popular among young people and tourists seeking a retro atmosphere, this coffee shop has gained attention on social media. Due to its unique otherworldly atmosphere, it has also been used as a filming location for famous Japanese movies and dramas.

What is a Kissaten?

A kissaten is a Japanese-style cafe that offers not only beverages like coffee and tea but also light meals and sweets. Many shops focus on quality coffee and serve Western-style food and desserts that complement their coffee.

Moreover, Japanese retro-style cafes have long been beloved by locals as places to enjoy breakfast with coffee. Since each kissaten has its own concept and special features, those interested might enjoy visiting various coffee shops.

True to its name, Kojo is characterized by its unique atmosphere that makes you feel as if you've wandered into an old castle. The interior features luxurious and retro decorations including chandeliers and stained glass. The beautiful atmosphere makes you want to take photos just by looking around the shop.

The shop's 69 seats are also carefully designed, including special "romance seats" made for couples. The seats are covered with comfortable velvet material to ensure a relaxing experience.

Recommended for those who want to take a break during their travels, as it offers an atmosphere completely different from Ueno's natural parks and bustling shopping streets.

You'll be overwhelmed by the high ceilings that make you forget you're underground, the spacious interior adorned with luxurious chandeliers, and stunning stained glass windows.

At Cafe Kojo, you can enjoy a unique experience of having Japanese coffee and light meals in an atmosphere that exudes medieval European grandeur.

One of Cafe Kojo's most distinctive features is its basement stairway and the stained glass windows positioned at the back of the store. The stained glass is said to be designed after the staircase in Russia's Hermitage Museum and is a one-of-a-kind custom-made piece. The stained glass depicts knights, and its frame features elaborate wooden carvings, creating a sense of both retro charm and luxury.

The area around the stained glass features custom-made elaborate chandeliers and stone walls, all contributing to creating an extraordinary atmosphere.

Solemn Classical Music and Velvet Chairs Further Refine the Ambiance

At Cafe Kojo, classical music and velvet chairs create an even more pleasant atmosphere. While enjoying your meal or coffee, you can listen to solemn music like Mozart's Requiem playing in the background, allowing for an elegant dining experience.

The velvet sofas offer a smooth touch and soft texture, providing a cozy, enveloping comfort when seated. The tables surrounded by these sofas are lower-set pieces that reflect over 60 years of history.

The combination of classical music and velvet sofas helps relax both mind and body, making it perfect for those seeking a quiet, peaceful space.

Among Cafe Kojo's coffee offerings, their blend coffee is particularly popular. They use "Blue Mountain" coffee beans, known for their superior quality, and carefully brew each cup using cloth filters to create a smooth coffee experience.

The blend coffee offers a perfect balance of acidity and bitterness, making it easy to drink. Besides blend coffee, they offer various options like Vienna coffee and Kojo's special cocoa, ensuring even non-coffee drinkers can thoroughly enjoy their visit.

At Cafe Kojo, attention is paid not only to the drinks themselves but also to the cup designs, with different cups used for different customers. Take time to appreciate the retro cup designs while enjoying your coffee.

Another must-visit establishment alongside Cafe Kojo is Cafe Oujo, considered one of Ueno's two great historic cafes. Located about 4 minutes on foot from Ueno Station, Cafe Oujo was established in 1975 and is distinguished by its brick exterior and purple signage. The interior features classic decorations, creating a relaxing retro atmosphere.

Cafe Oujo has maintained many of its original menu items for nearly 50 years, with their pasta dishes and parfaits being particularly popular. Their "Napolitan" pasta, a Japanese-style pasta dish, and chocolate parfait are especially beloved by customers.

While both Cafe Kojo and Cafe Oujo are retro cafes, each has its own unique atmosphere and charm. If time permits, we recommend visiting both establishments. When I'm in Ueno, I make it a point to enjoy both of these classic cafes whenever possible.
