The naturally rich Mt. Fuji area offers numerous spots where visitors can enjoy the spectacular collaboration between Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms. Festivals are held in various locations coinciding with the cherry blossom blooming period from late March through April. The venues come alive with nighttime illuminations, free traditional tea and sweets distributions, and food truck vendors.

The festivals that coincide with the blooming of cherry blossoms and other flowers are among my personal favorite annual events. For those visiting Japan during this season, I highly recommend enjoying the festivals alongside the views of Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms!

7 Festivals Where You Can Enjoy the Spectacular Collaboration of Cherry Blossoms and Mt. Fuji in April

Fuji Shibazakura Festival

Fuji Shibazakura Festival

The Fuji Shibazakura Festival is one of the signature spring events at Lake Kawaguchiko. Shibazakura, known as "creeping phlox" in English, resembles cherry blossoms spreading across the ground.

At the Fuji Shibazakura Festival, 520,000 moss phlox plants create a vibrant pink carpet across the landscape. The collaboration between the majestic Mt. Fuji in the background and the Shibazakura creates a breathtaking view, offering one of Japan's most enchanting spring sceneries.

The festival venue, Fuji Motosuko Resort, features a café designed around the concept of an English garden where Peter Rabbit resides. The English garden showcases over 300 plant varieties. At the café, you can enjoy dishes inspired by the storybook world, such as salads made with vegetables from Mr. McGregor's garden and berry pies. When visiting the Fuji Shibazakura Festival, make sure to stop by this charming café as well.

During the Fuji Shibazakura Festival period, Fuji Motosuko Resort also hosts the "Fujisan Umaimono Festival" (Mt. Fuji Gourmet Festival). This local food event features food trucks and stalls offering unique flavors from around Mt. Fuji.

Among the festival foods, I recommend trying the award-winning "Fujinomiya Yakisoba," which has earned the grand prix among Japan's local foods. Yakisoba is a noodle dish similar to chow mein. Fujinomiya's local yakisoba is characterized by its firm texture and includes "nikukasu" (deep-fried pork back fat), which enhances the dish's delicious flavor. As this is a regional specialty, be sure to try it when you find it!

Fuji Kawaguchiko Cherry Blossom Festival

A popular cherry blossom viewing spot is located on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko. Along the 1km walking trail on the north shore, approximately 200 cherry trees are planted, creating a magnificent landscape when the blossoms are in full bloom. From the lake's southern side, you can enjoy the stunning collaboration of cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji in the background.

During peak bloom in early April, the annual "Kawaguchiko Sakura Festival" is held, featuring illuminations and stamp rallies among other events. During the festival period, a Craft Festival is also held simultaneously, where local artisans sell handmade bags, tableware, and other crafts. It's an event I look forward to every year, where you can enjoy shopping amidst beautiful cherry blossoms!

Arakurayama Sengen Park Cherry Blossom

The "Mt. Arakura Sengen Park," famous for its views of the five-storied pagoda with Mt. Fuji, offers its most spectacular scenery during cherry blossom season. The sight of 650 cherry trees blooming together is breathtaking and leaves a lasting impression on visitors. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience where you can truly appreciate the beauty of Japan's seasons.

This year, the "Mt. Arakura Sengen Park Sakura Festival" will be held from April 1 to April 18, 2025. During the festival period, food trucks offering various cuisines and coffee will be available, allowing you to enjoy the magnificent views while dining.

As this is a popular spot, there may be lines on the mountain path with waiting times of over an hour to reach the observation deck. For those wanting to avoid crowds, visiting before 10 AM or after 4 PM is recommended.

Fujizakura Festival

While driving along the mountain road, you'll encounter a traditional Japanese-style house. This house, called "Nakano Chaya," is a tea house boasting 300 years of history. Even today, you can enjoy light meals such as udon noodles and dango (rice dumplings).

Near Nakano Chaya, approximately 20,000 Fujizakura (Mount Fuji Cherry Blossoms) grow naturally, and every year in mid-April, the Fujizakura Festival is held. While most cherry blossoms seen in Japan are of the "Someiyoshino" variety, Fujizakura produces smaller flowers compared to Someiyoshino. The delicate appearance of numerous flowers blooming on a single branch is very charming, making it one of my favorite varieties.

During the event, enjoy complimentary tea and "Sakuramochi" (rice cakes wrapped in salted cherry blossom leaves) available for purchase.

Fujizakura and Mitsubatsutsuji Festival

Many natural Fujizakura trees grow around Mt. Fuji. At Kawaguchiko Souzou-no-mori at the foot of Mt. Fuji, both Fujizakura and Mitsubatsutsuji (three-leaf azalea) reach their peak bloom in mid-April. Mitsubatsutsuji is a type of azalea that produces numerous flowers on a single tree, creating a spectacular display. The collaboration of simultaneously blooming Fujizakura and Mitsubatsutsuji creates a breathtaking view.

From late April to early May, the Fujizakura & Mitsubatsutsuji Festival is held. The festival offers free treats like popcorn, cotton candy, and "Amazake" (a sweet drink made from sake lees). You can also purchase bonsai and seedlings. Additionally, workshops on medicinal herbs, wild vegetables, and forestry are held. It's one of my favorite events that I look forward to every year, packed with various activities.

Spring Festival

Spring Festival

The "Hana no Miyako Park," where visitors can enjoy the spectacular collaboration between seasonal flowers and Mt. Fuji, will host the "Spring Festival" from late April to early May. During the event, visitors can enjoy many blooming flowers and participate in craft workshops.

The main flowers reaching their peak bloom during the event are 130,000 Tulips and Nemophila. The beautiful blue Nemophila has recently gained attention from young people for being photogenic on social media. The scene created by the blue of Mt. Fuji and the blue of Nemophila is refreshing and signals the arrival of early summer. Many visitors travel from far away specifically to see the Nemophila, and I confidently recommend this as one of the most spectacular viewing spots.

5 Spectacular Spots to Enjoy Cherry Blossoms and Mt. Fuji Outside the Event Venue

Shinnasho River

Shinnasho River
Source:Home of Fujisan Yamanashi

The "Shinnasho River" flowing near Oshino Hakkai, famous for its Mt. Fuji spring water, is also known as a popular cherry blossom viewing spot. During the cherry blossom season, daffodils grow naturally along the riverbank, creating a beautiful collaboration of pink cherry blossoms and yellow daffodils that extends for 400 meters. Looking south from the Shinnasho River, you can see Mt. Fuji, creating a breathtaking landscape.

The Shinnasho River area is also known for its traditional Japanese houses, allowing visitors to experience old Japan. Why not enjoy cherry blossom viewing while experiencing Japan's traditional landscape in the warm spring weather?

Takeda Shrine and Takeda Street

Takeda Shrine and Takeda Street
Source:Home of Fujisan Yamanashi

The Takeda Shrine enshrines Shogun "Takeda Shingen," who unified the area called Kai (around present-day Kofu city) during the Sengoku period of the 1500s.

Cherry blossom trees are planted along both the Takeda Shrine grounds and its approaching path. Along "Takeda Street," cherry blossom trees line both sides of the 2km path, enchanting visitors during the blooming season. With Mt. Fuji visible in the distance, visitors can enjoy the special Cherry Blossom Festival events scheduled for April 2025, featuring traditional performances and local food stalls.

Takeda Shingen remains very popular in Kofu city, and you can discover many historical spots related to him. My recommendation is to rent a bicycle at Kofu Station and cycle to the shrine while visiting various Shingen-related spots along the way.

<Information>
Season: Late March to early April
Access: From JR Tokyo Station, take the JR Chuo Line bound for Otsuki. Get off at Otsuki Station, transfer trains and continue to Kofu. From Kofu Station, take bus number 10 or 11 and get off at "Takeda Shrine"

The Cherry Tree of Wanizuka

The Cherry Tree of Wanizuka
Source:Home of Fujisan Yamanashi

In the depths of Yamanashi Prefecture stands a magnificent cherry blossom tree with the majestic Mt. Fuji as its backdrop. This cherry blossom is of the "Edo Higan Zakura" variety. While the common Somei Yoshino cherry trees typically live for about 100 years, Edo Higan Zakura can live up to 1,000 years. Due to their longevity, these trees grow to impressive sizes and display dynamic beauty.

The Edo Higan Zakura at "Wanizuka" is 330 years old. You'll feel the romance emanating from this symbolic tree that has watched over this land for more than three centuries. In celebration of the 2025 spring season, special Mt. Fuji viewing platforms will be installed near the tree, offering perfect photo opportunities of the cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji in the background.

A festival is held annually from late March to early April during the blooming period. Don't miss the magical illumination events in the evenings.

<Information>
Season: Late March to early April
Access: From JR Tokyo Station, take the JR Chuo Line bound for Otsuki. Get off at Otsuki Station, transfer to the Chuo Line (out-bound line) and get off at Nirasaki. From Nirasaki Station, take the Maruno Line Bus and get off at "Takeda Yahata Iriguchi"

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine
Source:Fujinomiya Navi

The Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine is the head shrine of all Sengen shrines across Japan, known for their dedication to Mt. Fuji worship. Located on the western side of Mt. Fuji, the shrine grounds feature the Wakutama Pond, which is fed by Mt. Fuji's underground springs.

The shrine is famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot in spring, with 500 cherry trees decorating the shrine grounds. My favorite cherry trees are the weeping cherry blossoms along the front shrine hall, which bloom slightly earlier than other varieties, usually around mid-March. Their shower-like cascading branches create a magnificent and powerful beauty.

[2025 Update for Tourists: In April 2025, the shrine will be hosting special evening illumination events, making it an even more enchanting destination for visitors.]

This beautiful shrine is also a popular spot for wedding photo sessions during this season.

<Information>
Season: Mid-March to early April
Access: From JR Tokyo Station, take the Shinkansen (outbound line) to Mishima Station. Transfer to JR Tokaido Line (outbound) to Fuji Station. Then take JR Minobu Line to Fujinomiya Station. 10-minute walk from Fujinomiya Station.

Mt. Iwadono (North of Fujiyoshida City)

Mt. Iwadono
Source:Home of Fujisan Yamanashi

Iwadonosan is a rocky mountain selected as one of the 12 premier spots in Otsuki City for viewing Mt. Fuji. Although it takes about 30 minutes to walk to the 634m summit, the panoramic view of Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms from the peak is spectacular.

The mountain trail features over 300 cherry trees and 600 azalea bushes, making spring hiking particularly enjoyable amidst the blooming flowers. Located at the terminus of the Chuo Line, Otsuki Station, it's also recommended for those who want to try hiking in Japan casually.

[2025 Advisory for Tourists: Special guided hiking tours will be available in April 2025, providing a safer experience for international visitors.]

Please note that bears have been spotted in the mountains of Otsuki City, so exercise caution when hiking alone and use bells or other noise-making devices to alert wildlife of your presence.

Traditional Events Around Mt. Fuji in April 2025

Kai no Katsuyama Yabusame Festival

Kai no Katsuyama Yabusame Festival
Source:Kawaguchiko Lake

The "Kai no Katsuyama Yabusame Festival" is a historic festival that has continued for over 900 years. It originated when "Shinra Saburo Yoshimitsu," an ancestor of Takeda Shingen who unified the area called Kai in Yamanashi Prefecture, dedicated the celebration to a shrine commemorating victory in a war that lasted from 1083 to 1087.

The sight of local members of archery and horsemanship, dressed in traditional costumes, shooting targets while riding horses is a must-see spectacle. Their dynamic performance will make you feel as if you're watching a Sengoku Warlord from the historical era.

As even Japanese people rarely get to see such traditional formal ceremonies, if you're a Sengoku era enthusiast visiting Japan during this time, you should definitely check it out!

Special April Experiences Around Mt. Fuji

Fuji Subaru Land Spring Festival

Fuji Subaru Land Spring Festival
Source:Official website

"Fuji Subaru Land" is a forest park at the foot of Mt. Fuji where you can enjoy attractions like mazes and athletic facilities in the midst of nature. This park, which feels like an amusement park with the concept of "a playground for family enjoyment," is perfect for families. My personal recommendation is the mini steam locomotive that runs through nature. The SL racing through the great outdoors offers an exceptional refreshing experience.

Fuji Subaru Land holds its Spring Festival from late April to early May during Golden Week, a Japanese holiday period. During this time, the native Azalea "Mitsuba Tsutsuji" blooms brilliantly, painting the park in vivid colors.

With animal interactions and character shows, this is a highly recommended spot for those looking for tourist attractions with young children!
