itinerary Published: Nov 4, 2024

I first visited Chichibu when I was a university student, despite being born and raised in Tokyo.

Just two hours away from the hustle and bustle of the city, I discovered a completely different world. It's an area rich in natural beauty and historical shrines and temples.

The presence of the ancient Chichibu Shrine and the remnants of the silk and textile industries that flourished during the Edo period can still be felt throughout the town.

In particular, the Chichibu Night Festival, which has continued for over 300 years, is one of Japan's representative festivals registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. As a city-bred person, I was overwhelmed by the depth of tradition and culture rooted in this land.

After visiting many times since then, Chichibu has become a special place for me. It's a healing spot where I can reset my mind and body, stepping away from daily life in Tokyo, while also being a valuable place to experience Japanese history and culture firsthand.

I'll introduce a travel plan that allows you to fully enjoy Chichibu's charm in just one day, from my perspective as a Tokyo local. Nature, culture, cuisine, hot springs - this perfect one-day trip itinerary condenses all of Chichibu's attractions. I'm sure you'll fall in love with Chichibu just like I did.

Chichibu's Appeal: A Hidden Gem Where Nature and Culture Merge

Chichibu City

Chichibu is a place overflowing with charm completely different from the city, despite being just two hours away from Tokyo. Here, I'll introduce Chichibu's attractions in detail.

First, there are numerous places where you can enjoy spectacular views throughout the four seasons, such as Mt. Buko and Nagatoro Gorge.

Cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn foliage in fall, and snow-covered landscapes in winter - beautiful scenery spreads out throughout the year. I especially love the autumn foliage and visit almost every year.

Next, let's talk about Chichibu's historical temples and shrines. Places like Chichibu Shrine and Mitsumine Shrine are also popular as power spots.

When I visited Chichibu Shrine, I felt a mysterious energy and had an experience that cleansed my soul. These temples and shrines are precious places where you can feel Japanese traditional culture firsthand.

Chichibu's food culture is also attractive. There's an abundance of dishes using local specialties such as waraji katsu, Chichibu soba, and local sake.

My personal favorite is Chichibu soba. The combination of the firm noodles and fragrant broth is exquisite, and I never fail to eat it every time I visit.

Lastly, Chichibu is an unmissable place for anime fans. There are numerous locations that served as settings for popular anime such as "Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day" and "The Anthem of the Heart." A special space spreads out where you can experience the world of anime in reality.

Best Season to Visit Chichibu

Chichibu in Autumn

While Chichibu has charm in every season, from my experience, I can confidently say that autumn is the best season. Autumn foliage viewing is the biggest highlight, truly making it the best season.

The autumn colors of Mt. Buko and Nagatoro Gorge are breathtakingly beautiful, attracting many tourists every year. I too visit Chichibu's mountains every autumn with my camera in hand, captivated by the spectacular views.

Winter is also a season where you can fully enjoy Chichibu's charm. Especially the Chichibu Night Festival held in early December is a major event not to be missed.

This festival, with over 300 years of history, is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The town is decorated with gorgeous floats and tens of thousands of lanterns.

I still can't forget the excitement I felt when I first saw the Chichibu Night Festival. Wrapped in an enthusiasm and energy that made me forget the cold, I could feel the magnificence of Japanese traditional culture firsthand.

However, Chichibu's charm is not limited to specific seasons. Hot springs, gourmet food, and shrine and temple visits can be enjoyed regardless of the season.

Cherry blossoms and fresh greenery in spring, cool valleys and fireworks festivals in summer, and autumn foliage and snowy landscapes in fall and winter. No matter which season you visit, you're sure to encounter Chichibu's unique charm.

For me, raised in Tokyo, Chichibu is a special place that gives me fresh surprises and discoveries throughout the four seasons. Please enjoy Chichibu's diverse attractions according to the season of your visit.

Access from Tokyo to Chichibu

Laview

I've visited Chichibu many times, and each time I'm surprised by how close it is to Tokyo. Here, based on my experience, I'll introduce the most efficient and enjoyable ways to access Chichibu.

First, the most recommended option is the Seibu Railway's limited express "Laview." It takes only about 80 minutes from Ikebukuro Station to Seibu-Chichibu Station.

You can leisurely enjoy the scenery gradually changing from Tokyo's cityscape to nature-rich landscapes. The comfortable interior allows you to soak in the atmosphere of Chichibu from the start of your journey.

Next, the highway bus is also a convenient option. It takes about 120 minutes from Ikebukuro Station to Seibu-Chichibu Station, but it's cheaper than the train and you can secure a seat. I choose this option when I want to enjoy the scenery leisurely or when departing early in the morning.

Traveling by car is also possible. It takes about 90 minutes from the city center to Hanazono IC on the Kanetsu Expressway. I use this when going with friends for a drive, as it offers the flexibility to take breaks at service areas or stop by hot springs on the way back.

And especially recommended for foreign tourists is the SEIBU 1Day Pass. This is a one-day free pass for Seibu lines, exclusively for foreign tourists. My friends from overseas have also enjoyed Chichibu efficiently and economically using this pass.

Morning: Enjoying Chichibu's Morning

8:00 AM - 9:30 AM From Ikebukuro Station to Seibu-Chichibu Station

In the fresh morning air, head from Ikebukuro Station to Seibu-Chichibu Station. Board the Seibu Ikebukuro Line limited express "Laview."

I recommend getting breakfast at the station or a convenience store.

9:30 AM - 10:00 AM Arrive at Seibu-Chichibu Station and Prepare for Sightseeing

Upon arriving at Seibu-Chichibu Station, first take a restroom break and get ready.

I also recommend getting drinks at this time.

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Visit Chichibu Shrine

Chichibu Shrine

Start with Chichibu Shrine, a must-see in Chichibu sightseeing. The national treasure main shrine building is a must-see. When I first visited here, I was overwhelmed by its majestic appearance.

Pay attention to the sculptures and decorations in the shrine grounds. They embody Japanese traditional aesthetics.

Strolling leisurely along the approach to the shrine is also enjoyable. I always ponder on Chichibu's history and culture here.

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Visit Chichibu Meisen Museum

Chichibu Meisen

At the Chichibu Meisen Museum, where you can learn about the history of Chichibu's traditional textile "Chichibu Meisen," you can experience Chichibu's weaving culture that has continued since the Edo period. Looking at the beautiful kimonos and accessories, I'm reminded again of the wonder of Japanese traditional crafts.

Afternoon: Experiencing Chichibu's Nature and Culture

12:00 PM - 1:30 PM Lunch (Chichibu City Area)

Waraji Katsu Don

For lunch, let's enjoy the famous Waraji Katsu Don in the Chichibu city area. I still can't forget the shock I felt when I first ate Waraji Katsu Don. I was surprised by its size and deliciousness, and realized the richness of Chichibu's food culture.

Chichibu soba is also recommended. The firm noodles and fragrant broth are delicacies nurtured by Chichibu's clear water and air.

Every time I visit, I find myself torn between Waraji Katsu Don and Chichibu soba. Both are excellent dishes that allow you to fully enjoy the taste of Chichibu, so please try them.

1:30 PM - 2:15 PM To Nagatoro Station

Move from Chichibu Main Line "Ohanabatake Station" to "Nagatoro Station."

2:15 PM - 3:30 PM Nagatoro Gorge Walk

Nagatoro

At Nagatoro Gorge, I first recommend the river rafting experience. It's about a 20-minute boat trip, but during that time you can fully enjoy the natural beauty of Chichibu. When I first experienced it, I felt my heart being cleansed by the leisurely flowing time while gazing at the rock formations.

Taking the Hodosan Ropeway to the summit is also recommended. The view from the summit is spectacular. You can see all of Chichibu's mountains at once, and depending on the season, you might even see a sea of clouds.

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM Relax in Hot Springs

Matsuri no Yu

Let's soothe the fatigue of the day at the Seibu-Chichibu Station front hot spring "Matsuri no Yu." This is my favorite hot spring facility.

What I especially like is entering the open-air bath at dusk. Soaking in the hot spring while watching Chichibu's mountains dyed by the sunset makes me feel like I'm in a painting. It's a luxurious time that can never be experienced in the city.

7:30 PM - 9:00 PM From Seibu-Chichibu Station to Ikebukuro Station

Before boarding the return train, do a final check for souvenirs. I always purchase delicious local sake from Chichibu, Meisen accessories, and souvenirs for friends and family.

Board the limited express "Laview" and head to Ikebukuro, ending this journey.

Here I'll introduce Chichibu spots that couldn't be included in this itinerary. If you have extra time, please try to visit these places.

Hitsujiyama Park

Hitsujiyama Park in Spring

Hitsujiyama Park is a wonderful spot where you can fully enjoy the beauty of Chichibu's nature. When I first visited here in spring, I was breathless at its beauty. The sight of blooming moss phlox was particularly impressive.

However, the charm of Hitsujiyama Park is not limited to spring. As a nature-rich park where you can enjoy flowers of the four seasons, you can enjoy beautiful scenery throughout the year.

From the observatory in the park, you can see a spectacular view of Chichibu city and Mt. Buko. The scenery at dusk is especially exceptional, and the sight of Chichibu's townscape and mountains dyed by the sunset has become an unforgettable memory.

There's also a petting farm in the park where you can interact with sheep. Direct interaction with animals, which can't be experienced in the city, is especially popular with children.

Chichibu Geo Gravity Park

Chichibu Geo Gravity Park

Chichibu Geo Gravity Park is a hidden gem in Chichibu that I recently discovered. It's a natural experience-type activity park set up in a gorge where you can enjoy thrills and natural beauty simultaneously.

The first thing I experienced was the Canyon Walk. Walking on a suspension bridge about 50m high was scary at first, but as I took each step, I was captivated by the surrounding spectacular view.

The view of the gorge below is breathtaking, giving you a strange sensation as if you're walking in the air.

Next, I challenged the Canyon Fly. The experience of crossing the river on a zipline with a maximum height difference of 60m felt like becoming a bird. The exhilaration of gliding through the wind is indescribable. I think it's a unique experience where you can enjoy Chichibu's nature in a 360-degree panorama.

The last thing I experienced was the Canyon Bungee. Jumping from a height of 50m was the biggest challenge of my life. The fear and excitement at the moment of jumping, and the sense of accomplishment after landing, are still vivid in my memory.

Chichibu Geo Gravity Park offers a wealth of unique adventure experiences that take advantage of Chichibu's nature. You can have thrilling experiences that make you feel one with nature, which you can never experience in the city.

Chichibu Muse Park

From Chichibu Muse Park

Chichibu Muse Park is a theme park in the mountains of Chichibu. It's not just an amusement park, but a facility with unique charm that blends with nature.

What impressed me the most is the view from the observatory. You can enjoy a panoramic view, overlooking Chichibu's mountains and urban area.

The seasonal attractions are also a feature of Chichibu Muse Park. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom in full, creating a breathtaking scene of pink. In autumn, the fall foliage is beautiful, and it's very enjoyable to stroll among the trees dyed red and yellow.

The Chichibu Festival Museum is a special place where you can feel the culture and tradition of Chichibu firsthand.

When I first visited here, I was surprised by the scale of the exhibition and the richness of its content. This facility, where you can see the floats and costumes of the Chichibu Night Festival all year round, is a valuable spot where you can immerse yourself in the world of the festival, which is said to be the soul of Chichibu.

The greatest attraction of this museum is being able to see the actual floats up close. You can leisurely observe the gorgeous and magnificent floats, which are usually only visible during the festival, down to the smallest details.

It also functions well as a museum where you can learn about the history and culture of the festival. Through detailed explanations, you can deepen your understanding of Chichibu's culture, from the origins of the Chichibu Night Festival to its evolution to the present day, and the meanings of the tools and costumes used in the festival.

Mitsumine Shrine

Mitsumine Shrine

Mitsumine Shrine is a mystical shrine deep in the mountains of Chichibu. Located at an altitude of 1100m, this shrine has been particularly popular as a power spot in recent years, but its history is ancient, giving you a sense of the depth of Japanese Shinto culture.

I first visited Mitsumine Shrine when I was facing a big wall in my work. As I walked along the mystical atmosphere of the approach to the shrine, I felt my heart strangely calming down.

When I saw the sacred tree over 800 years old, I was overwhelmed by its presence and felt my worries becoming small.

One of the characteristics of Mitsumine Shrine is that it's a rare shrine where wolf worship remains. Many wolf statues and votive picture tablets can be seen in the shrine grounds, conveying the existence of wolves as guardian deities of the mountain to this day.
