sightseeing spot Published: Oct 20, 2024
Updated: Nov 5, 2024

Osaka is known as one of Japan's largest cities, home to about 7% of the country's population and around 10% of its foreign residents. It is the second-largest metropolis after Tokyo and has developed its own unique food culture, earning nicknames like "the nation's kitchen" and "the city of food indulgence." As a result, it's popular not only for its sightseeing spots but also for being a culinary paradise for tourists.

Having been a central hub in Japan's history, Osaka has always been a bustling place, with well-developed transportation systems. This has attracted various goods, and numerous commercial and entertainment facilities have been established over time.

One of these is the world-famous Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, one of the largest-class aquariums globally. Now, let’s dive into why the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is a must-visit spot for tourists, offering fun for both adults and children.

Osaka's Popular Spot, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan: One of the Largest-Class Aquariums in the World

What is an Aquarium?

An aquarium is a facility that collects, nurtures, and displays marine and freshwater creatures. Some aquariums even offer animal shows or opportunities to interact with the creatures. The best part of visiting an aquarium is being able to observe these fascinating creatures up close—something you wouldn't normally see in daily life.

Aquariums are popular not only for family outings but also as a go-to spot for dates, as they offer enjoyment for people of all ages.

Features of Japanese Aquariums

Aquarium

Japan holds the world’s highest number of aquariums per capita, making aquariums a familiar destination for many Japanese people. This fondness is likely due to Japan being an island nation, surrounded by the sea, fostering a close connection with marine life.

Japan’s first aquarium was a freshwater fish exhibition facility at Ueno Zoo. While many overseas aquariums are combined with zoos, standalone aquariums are becoming increasingly common in Japan. In recent years, more theme park-style aquariums have been established as a way to boost regional tourism.

The Three Charms of Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan! Insider Tips for Enhancing Your Experience

Faithfully Recreated Natural Environments from Around the World

The first charm of Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is its faithful recreation of natural environments, centering around the Pacific Ocean, the world’s largest ocean. The aquarium boasts 14 tanks, with the massive "Pacific Ocean" tank being the main attraction.

The tanks are thoughtfully arranged to mimic the geography of the Pacific Rim, offering visitors the chance to observe marine life in environments that closely resemble their natural habitats.

A Vertical Aquarium Walkway That Feels Like You're Diving Under the Sea

The second charm is the rare vertical-style walkway that guides you through the aquarium. After entering, visitors take an escalator to the 8th floor and then spiral down to the 4th floor, observing the tanks as they go. The descending path creates the sensation of diving deeper into the ocean as you explore.

Walking along this corridor, I couldn’t help but feel like a fish myself, swimming through the deep ocean. The experience was exhilarating.

Popular Attractions: The Whale Shark and the Adorable Ringed Seals

The third charm is the chance to observe popular marine creatures up close, including the whale shark, the aquarium's most famous resident, and the adorable ringed seals.

The whale shark, the largest fish species in the world, is a symbol of Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. You can find two whale sharks—Kai (male) and Yuu (female)—in the Pacific Ocean exhibit on floors 4 through 6. Their sheer size is awe-inspiring, especially when they swim gracefully near the glass.

The ringed seals, with their characteristic ring-like spots, are also fan favorites. Their cute expressions and playful behaviors are heartwarming, and the area around their tank is always bustling with visitors. I was completely smitten by their charming antics during my visit.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Enjoying Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Start with the New Experience of Walking Through the "Aqua Gate"

Let’s walk through the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan along the recommended route, starting with the tunnel-shaped "Aqua Gate" right at the entrance. The tank surrounds you on both sides and above, giving you the immersive feeling of walking underwater.

One of the unique aspects of the Aqua Gate is that you can observe fish from directly below, which offers a rare view that most aquariums can't provide. There are various fish swimming in the Aqua Gate, but my personal favorite is the Sakura Damsel. Just as its name suggests, its vivid orange color, resembling cherry blossoms, is strikingly beautiful and grabs your attention right away.

The Beauty of Japan’s Four Seasons in the "Japan Forest" on the 8th Floor

Next, move on to the "Japan Forest" area on the 8th floor. This area features not only aquariums but also trees, flowers, waterfalls, and moss-covered rocks, offering a garden-like atmosphere. It’s a lush green space where you can fully appreciate the beauty of Japan’s four seasons. Each season brings a different look, making it one of my favorite areas to visit repeatedly.

In the Japan Forest, you can encounter creatures like Ayu fish, Kawamutsu, and even adorable Asian small-clawed otters and egrets. With the peaceful sound of flowing water and the sight of moss gleaming after being touched by water, you’ll experience the unique serenity of Japanese nature.

The Powerful Whale Shark in the "Pacific Ocean" Area on the 4th to 6th Floors

As you descend the spiral walkway from the 8th floor, you’ll arrive at the "Pacific Ocean" area on floors 4 to 6. Did you know that the Pacific Ocean covers about one-third of the Earth's surface and is home to a vast array of marine life?

At Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, you’ll find many creatures in this area, including sunfish, grouper, horse mackerel, and, of course, the ever-popular whale shark. Watching the whale shark glide through the water with its massive body, or observing the unique movements of the schooling barracuda and gracefully swimming rays, is a captivating experience.

I highly recommend spending some extra time here to fully appreciate the impressive size and gentle swimming of the whale shark in the large tank.

Meet the Charming Smiling Ringed Seals in the "Arctic Zone" on the 3rd and 4th Floors

Continue your journey down the walkway to the "Arctic Zone" on the 3rd and 4th floors. The Arctic Zone spans two floors, with ringed seals living on the ice-covered 4th floor, while fish and crustaceans that dwell under the Arctic ice are displayed on the 3rd floor.

The creatures on the 3rd floor were all collected by the aquarium's staff on-site in the Arctic. Since there is still much to learn about Arctic species care, this exhibit is a rare and valuable experience.

The highlight of this area is the ringed seal, the beloved mascot of Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. With its round, plump body and charming smile, it never fails to win the hearts of visitors.

The "Gyugyutto Cute" Area on the 5th Floor: A Hit with Kids and Full of Adorable Marine Life

On the 5th floor, you’ll find the "Gyugyutto Cute" area, which is especially popular with children. This section focuses on the shapes, patterns, and colors of the cute and charming creatures that live underwater. The tanks are set lower to ensure that even small children can easily enjoy the exhibits.

One of my personal recommendations is the dome-shaped tank where you can see clownfish, made famous by the animated film *Finding Nemo*. Watching them swim playfully through the colorful coral with tropical fish is simply adorable.

Additionally, there are hand-drawn nameplates by the aquarium staff, explaining the characteristics of the fish. With easy-to-understand illustrations, it’s a fun way to learn about the fish, making it a hit with kids and a great educational experience.

Three Must-See Animals at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, Loved by Kids!

When visiting Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, there are three animals you should definitely see. Let’s introduce them!

Whale Shark

Whale Shark

First is the whale shark. Its massive body gliding gracefully through the wide tank exudes an overwhelming presence.

In Japan, you can only see whale sharks at three aquariums: Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, and Kagoshima Aquarium. What makes Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan special is that you can witness two whale sharks swimming together, a rare sight!

Be sure to snap a photo when you catch the two of them crossing paths—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Ringed Seal

Ringed Seal

The second must-see is the ringed seal. Known for being the smallest among seals, its adorable appearance makes it a favorite among children and adults alike.

Recently, the Arctic Zone where the ringed seals live was renovated, offering them a much larger space. With their expanded habitat, you can enjoy seeing them in an even more relaxed state. I couldn’t help but smile at myself as I watched them laze around.

Due to the difficulty of raising ringed seals, only a few aquariums in Japan house them. When you visit Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, be sure to stop by and enjoy the calming presence of these delightful creatures.

Aptenodytes Patagonicus

Aptenodytes Patagonicus

Third is the Aptenodytes Patagonicus. Known as the second-largest penguin species, their presence is quite impressive when they gather in flocks. One of their charming features is not just their beak, but also the yellow markings around their necks.

Due to their popularity, plush toys that can be turned into keychains are available for purchase. You can flip the toy inside out to change it from an egg to a chick and finally to an adult penguin, making it a fun toy to play with.

The plush toys also feature great details, such as life-sized eggs and slightly elongated ankles, reflecting the careful craftsmanship of the aquarium staff. It’s a perfect souvenir for kids!

Perfect for Date Nights! Enjoy the Tranquil Atmosphere of the "Night Aquarium"

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is also famous for being a great spot to visit at night. From 5 PM to 8 PM, the aquarium transforms into a peaceful "Night Aquarium," with dimmed lighting and soothing music, creating a serene ocean-like atmosphere.

The lights illuminating the tanks resemble soft moonlight, adding to the aquarium's enchanting ambiance. The darker surroundings and the relaxed behavior of the animals make for a calming experience.

While the aquarium is bustling with families during the day, the nighttime vibe is more suited for adults, making it an ideal destination for a romantic date. The magical evening atmosphere allowed me to share a peaceful, luxurious moment with the creatures around me.

I participated in the feeding time event, and watching the whale sharks devour their food with their large mouths was a powerful experience. It’s a rare opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse, so be sure to try it out if you visit.
