Japanese traditional sweets “Tai-yaki” is generally made in the shape of “tai”, which means “sea bream” in Japanese and “yaki” means a pancake. But at Sanokiya, you can get what they call “Maguro-yaki”. “Maguro” means “tuna” in Japanese. So they sell tuna-shaped pancake. It is a kind of unique Tsukiji style. They bake dough of wheat with sweet bean jam inside in a metal mold. Their handmade ginger ale is also popular. This shop is located at one corner where you can go on foot from Tsukiji station and other seafood shops also exist. Although this shop is very small and only a sign that says “Maguro-yaki” is a guide, they are getting popular and have been on TV a few times.

At that shop you will find pacific bluefin tuna or medium-fatty tuna shaped Maguro-yaki. The puff shell of the pacific bluefin tuna shaped Maguro-yaki is so crispy but fluffy inside. And inside the medium-fatty tuna shaped Maguro-yaki, sweet bean jam containing whole beans is with apricot. So it tastes sour and sweet. Also the dough of the Magro-yaki is chewy.

Monaka is a Japanese traditional sweet. Bean jam is put between a thin wrapping of glutinous rice. At Sanokiya, you will find this sweet is also shaped in Maguro. You can choose sweet bean jam containing whole beans or aromatic citron. Whichever you choose, it’s very good with a tea.
