The Best Street Food in Shinjuku 2024
Shinjuku, home to Kabukicho - known as Asia's largest entertainment district - is a hub for countless street food options. Since moving to the Shinjuku area in October, I've been enjoying meals there almost daily. I decided to update this article to include the new street food spots I've discovered over these past two months.
Another reason for the update is the growing interest in food tours that offer a deeper experience of Tokyo's streets. The Shinjuku exploration tour with local guides offered by Magical Trip has become particularly popular - in fact, their "Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku" was ranked #1 among all tours on TripAdvisor for 2024.
Magical Trip also offers other experiences like the "Tokyo Night Foodie Tour in Shinjuku," where you can enjoy Japanese cuisine like sushi and yakiniku with local guides, and the "Harajuku Kawaii Fashion & Pop-culture Tour" in the neighboring district of Harajuku, where you can explore pop culture while sampling various foods.
If you want to experience Tokyo on a deeper level, I recommend trying one of these tours guided by locals.
Now, let's check out the street food scene in Shinjuku!
Introduction
Shinjuku is one of Tokyo's most iconic entertainment districts. Lined with department stores and surrounded by office buildings on the station's west side, JR Shinjuku Station is famous for being the world's busiest station by passenger traffic, with countless people passing through daily.
As one of Tokyo's most vibrant areas, Shinjuku's high foot traffic has led to the development of a bustling entertainment district with an impressive array of dining options. From retro alleyways to futuristic izakayas, the area features diverse and unique dining establishments. This rich variety of dining options is a distinctive characteristic of Shinjuku's street food scene in 2024.
In this article, we'll explore the street food you can enjoy in this densely packed culinary paradise, along with the unique atmosphere each establishment offers.

When craving sushi or sashimi, head to Ate Sushi. The restaurant features striking pop art sushi illustrations and traditional Kabuki-inspired pine and crane drawings on its walls. Despite being in the heart of Shinjuku's street food district in 2024, you can enjoy sushi topped with fresh fish straight from the source. Their signature "Seafood Bukkake Sushi" offers a generous serving of fresh seafood and ikura (salmon roe). You can also try rare fish varieties like nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) that are hard to find even within Japan.

6 Casual Izakaya and Restaurants in Shinjuku
Ucchan (Omoide Yokocho)
Source: Tabelog
Located in "Omoide Yokocho" near JR Shinjuku Station's West Exit, Ucchan specializes in "Motsu Yaki" (grilled offal). Motsu refers to animal organ meat, which is leaner than regular meat and characterized by its mild taste and chewy texture. These qualities make it perfect for grilling and stewing, and it pairs excellently with alcohol.
While Ucchan offers various offal cuts, I recommend the "Hatsu" (heart). With minimal gaminess, it's ideal for those new to organ meats. Their "Nikomi" (stew) is a classic izakaya dish that goes great with drinks. Don't miss this chance to experience motsu dishes unique to Japan's street food culture.

Taishuu Izakaya Monja Sakaba Dashiya (Kabukichō)
Source: Tabelog
As part of Shinjuku's vibrant street food scene in 2024, "Taishuu Izakaya Monja Sakaba Dashiya" specializes in "monjayaki." Monjayaki is a local Tokyo street food where a flour-based batter mixed with water, vegetables, and meat is cooked on a hot iron griddle. While similar to okonomiyaki, it has a more liquid consistency and doesn't form a pancake-like shape. Instead, diners scrape it directly from the griddle while eating. Part of its charm is gathering around the griddle with friends, making it a perfect social dining experience. Enjoy the monjayaki with some drinks and great company!
At Dashiya, besides monjayaki, you can enjoy other reasonably priced iron griddle dishes like okonomiyaki and yakitori. For bigger appetites, they offer all-you-can-eat options, so you can eat to your heart's content.

Ichiran (3 locations around Shinjuku Station)

"Ichiran" is Japan's most famous ramen restaurant. This tonkotsu ramen specialist features unique individual dining booths separated by partitions, allowing customers to focus entirely on their ramen experience. A highlight of Shinjuku's street food culture in 2024, Ichiran's pork bone-based soup is odorless, flavorful, and creamy. The silky and chewy thin noodles are addictively delicious. The perfect harmony between the soup and noodles will surely make you a fan after just one bowl. I'm certainly one of their many devoted fans!
Shinjuku has three Ichiran locations. It's especially convenient that some locations are open 24 hours - perfect for finishing off drinking with ramen!

Adding to Shinjuku's diverse street food offerings in 2024, they serve various creative udon dishes including mentaiko (spicy fish eggs) udon and curry udon.
