Introduction

Fujiyoshida, a city I've been visiting for over 10 years, is a historic town sprawling at the northern foot of Mount Fuji, a World Heritage site.

While breathtaking sightseeing spots like the spectacular view from Arakurayama Sengen Park and the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine with its 1200-year history are scattered throughout the city, there's also a nostalgic atmosphere where the traditional lifestyle of local citizens remains, which is part of its charm.

It's true that it can get crowded during tourist seasons, and some places lack sufficient English signage, but even considering these drawbacks, the clear air, the majestic figure of Mount Fuji, and the firm texture of Yoshida Udon are exceptionally appealing.

Especially during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, the scenery unfolds like an ukiyo-e painting, and there are new discoveries to be made with every visit. In this article, I'll introduce you to the charms of Fujiyoshida that Japanese people love, along with some special sightseeing spots.

The Appeal of the Fujiyoshida Area

fujiyoshida-1.jpg

Fujiyoshida is a special place where you can feel the majestic presence of Mount Fuji up close. The charm of this city, which I've been visiting for over 10 years, is endless.

The scenery of Mount Fuji, showing different expressions with each season, captivates my heart every time I visit. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom in full glory; in summer, Mount Fuji stands against a clear blue sky; in autumn, fall foliage adds vibrant colors; and in winter, it shows its snow-capped appearance. In this city, historical buildings and traditional culture dating back to the Edo period are carefully preserved, harmonizing beautifully with modern tourist facilities.

Tourist facilities are also well-developed, from modern amusement parks like Fuji-Q Highland to eateries lining ancient pilgrimage routes, offering various ways to enjoy. In particular, the local specialty, Yoshida Udon, attracts many tourists with its firm texture and unique taste.

How to Access Fujiyoshida

The journey to Fujiyoshida itself becomes a memorable experience. Access from Tokyo varies depending on the mode of transportation, allowing you to enjoy different sceneries and experiences.

Access from Tokyo

Taking the express train "Fuji Kaiyuu" from Shinjuku Station, you can arrive in about 2 hours. The train journey, viewing Mount Fuji from the window, becomes a part of the sightseeing experience itself.

If you use a highway bus, it takes about 2.5 hours from Shinjuku Busta, but the view of Mount Fuji from the highway is exceptional. If traveling by car, you can reach Fujiyoshida in about 1.5 hours via the Chuo Expressway, exiting at Kawaguchiko IC.

Getting Around the Mount Fuji Area

Fuji Kyuko Bus is ideal for efficiently visiting major sightseeing spots. My recommendation is exploring by rental bicycle. You can feel the atmosphere of the town while enjoying sightseeing at your own pace.

Taxis are also convenient, especially on winter days or when the weather is bad. There are also many hiking trails in the area, allowing you to enjoy nature while walking at the foot of Mount Fuji.

Must-See Sightseeing Spots in Fujiyoshida

Fujiyoshida is dotted with various tourist attractions, from scenic spots perfect for photography to historical buildings. Based on my 10 years of experience, I'll introduce recommended spots that have different charms depending on the season and time of day.

Arakurayama Sengen Park (Chureito Pagoda)

fujiyoshida-2.jpg

Arakurayama Sengen Park is a scenic spot representative of Fujiyoshida. After climbing about 400 stone steps, a view like a picture postcard spreads before you. The composition of the red five-story pagoda and Mount Fuji in the same frame continues to fascinate photographers from around the world.

I recommend visiting in the early morning. The sight of Mount Fuji and the five-story pagoda illuminated by the morning sun is breathtakingly beautiful. In spring, many cherry blossoms bloom, creating a fantastical scenery.

The autumn foliage season is also not to be missed. The contrast of trees dyed in red and yellow, the five-story pagoda, and the majestic Mount Fuji captures the hearts of visitors.

Fuji-Q Highland

Fuji-Q Highland is a unique theme park where you can enjoy world-class thrilling attractions with Mount Fuji as a backdrop. Thrill-packed attractions like "FUJIYAMA" captivate thrill-seekers from around the world.

What I particularly like is the amusement park experience while viewing Mount Fuji. The moment of looking up at Mount Fuji while riding a screaming machine becomes a special experience that can't be had elsewhere.

The kids' area is also well-developed, allowing families with small children to enjoy safely. You can also enjoy meeting popular characters in areas like Thomas Land.

Staying at a hotel directly connected to the park allows you to spend special time before opening and after closing, which I personally highly recommend.

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine

fujiyoshida-4.jpg

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine is the center of Mount Fuji worship with over 1200 years of history. What I particularly like is the solemn atmosphere where you can feel the footsteps of pilgrims from ancient times.

Sacred trees over 1000 years old stand in the shrine grounds, making it popular as a power spot. In summer, the "Mountain Opening" ceremony marking the start of Mount Fuji's climbing season is held, and many climbers visit to pray for safety. I look forward to this festival every year, where you can experience traditional Shinto rituals and the energy of local people.

Also, you can view the heroic figure of Mount Fuji from the shrine grounds, showing different expressions depending on the season and weather.

Culinary Experiences to Enjoy in Fujiyoshida

The food culture of Fujiyoshida reflects the history of the land and the lives of its people like a mirror. Among them, the local cuisine loved by locals will surely become a special memory for tourists.

Yoshida Udon

fujiyoshida-5.jpg

Yoshida Udon is a local dish representative of Fujiyoshida. One of the reasons I've been visiting for over 10 years is that I've become captivated by these firm noodles. Unlike regular udon, the noodles made with a special method have a chewy texture, and the more you chew, the more the aroma of wheat spreads.

The standard topping is sweet and savory stir-fried cabbage and horse meat. Though it seems like a simple combination, it creates an exquisite taste. Locals also enjoy eating a miso-based noodle dish with plenty of vegetables called "Hoto."

The price is also reasonable, with many shops offering a satisfying amount for around 1,000 yen. Especially in cold seasons, the warm broth and hot noodles warm you up from the core.

Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting Fujiyoshida

I'll answer common questions from tourists based on my experience.

What's the Best Season to Visit Fujiyoshida?

While Fujiyoshida's charm can be enjoyed throughout the year, I recommend spring and autumn. In spring, you can see cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji together at Arakurayama Sengen Park, which is perfect for photography. In autumn, the mountains are dyed with fall colors, creating a beautiful scenery harmonizing with the five-story pagoda and Mount Fuji. Summer is relatively cool and comfortable, while in winter you can see Mount Fuji dressed in snow.

What Should I Be Aware of When Visiting Arakurayama Sengen Park?

While Arakurayama Sengen Park is popular as a scenic spot, preparation is important when visiting. For climbing and descending the approximately 400 steps, comfortable sneakers and casual clothing are recommended. From my experience, as you'll likely take many photos, a smartphone charger and drinks are essential. Especially in the morning and evening, temperature differences can be significant, so I recommend bringing a jacket.

Also, it gets extremely crowded during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Early morning visits are the best time to enjoy photography at a leisurely pace. Checking the weather forecast also increases the chances of seeing Mount Fuji clearly.

Where Can I Eat Yoshida Udon?

There are numerous famous shops scattered throughout Fujiyoshida City. My favorites range from long-established shops in front of the station to small shops in residential areas bustling with locals. Each shop has slightly different tastes and textures, allowing you to enjoy their unique characteristics.

As it often gets crowded with locals especially during lunchtime, I recommend visiting at opening time or a bit later. Many shops only accept cash payments, so it's reassuring to prepare cash in advance.

How Many Hours Do I Need to Enjoy Fuji-Q Highland?

To fully enjoy Fuji-Q Highland, you need half a day to a full day. As popular attractions often have wait times, I recommend entering the park first thing in the morning.

Also, as the park has plenty of dining and shopping areas, it's possible to spend a relaxing full day there. As events and shows are held depending on the season, checking the schedule in advance allows you to enjoy efficiently.

Fujiyoshida is an attractive tourist destination sprawling at the foot of Mount Fuji, a World Heritage site. As I've been visiting for over 10 years, it's a city where you can make new discoveries no matter how many times you visit. It's packed with various charms, from beautiful nature changing with the seasons, historical shrines and temples, thrilling attractions, to unique food culture.

The spectacular view from Arakurayama Sengen Park, the solemn atmosphere of Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, the excitement of Fuji-Q Highland, and the unique taste of Yoshida Udon. These experiences will surely be deeply etched in the hearts of visitors.

For foreign tourists, Fujiyoshida will undoubtedly be a special place where Japanese traditional culture and modern entertainment harmonize beautifully. Please fully experience the charm of Fujiyoshida, which, like me, you'll want to visit again and again.
