Tokyo Fireworks 2025: Top firecracker Festivals Including Sumidagawa, Adachi, and Odaiba Displays

Tokyo events Published: Mar 28, 2025

One of Japan's traditional cultures is fireworks. In Japan, fireworks are affectionately known as "Hanabi." When written in Kanji, "Hanabi" means "fire flower." Japanese fireworks are characterized by their vibrant colors and beauty, resembling flowers. Various fireworks are named after flowers, such as "Kiku" (chrysanthemum) and "Botan" (peony).

Around Tokyo, you can enjoy fireworks throughout the year. The events range from traditional local celebrations to luxury events using the latest technology.

In this article, we will introduce the highlights, basic information, schedule, and access to venues for notable fireworks events to be held in 2025.

Fireworks Season in Japan: July to September

In Japan, fireworks have traditionally been launched as a tribute to the deceased. Mid-August is a period called "Bon," when it is believed that the spirits of the deceased return to this world. For this reason, many fireworks events have been held in July and August since ancient times.

While fireworks played a significant role as a ceremony for the deceased, in recent years, they have increasingly been used to enhance various events. In tourist areas around Tokyo such as near Mt. Fuji, Hakone, and Atami, the culture of launching fireworks in winter to enliven local communities has also become established.

Tokyo Disney Resort: Enjoy Fireworks Any Time of Year

When it comes to spots around Tokyo where you can enjoy fireworks year-round, Tokyo Disney Resort stands out. Approximately 300 fireworks are launched daily, synchronized with Disney songs. You can view them from both Tokyo DisneyLand and Tokyo DisneySea.

My recommended viewing spot at Disney Land is around Cinderella Castle. The collaboration between Cinderella Castle and the fireworks is very romantic. After the fireworks, there's also projection mapping on Cinderella Castle, so be sure to enjoy both. At Disney Sea, you can get a beautiful view of the fireworks from around the Soarin' attraction.

Tokyo Fireworks Events in March 2025

While fireworks events are not held in Tokyo during March, there are Tokyo Fireworks Events 2025 available in regions that can be visited on a day trip from Tokyo. Additionally, in late March, cherry blossoms reach their peak viewing time, offering spectacular views where cherry blossoms and fireworks perform together.

Atami Sea Fireworks Festival

Atami Sea Fireworks Festival

Atami is a tourist destination accessible from Tokyo in about 30 minutes by Shinkansen. The Atami Sea Fireworks Festival is held monthly to entertain visitors to this charming area near Tokyo. The Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 calendar includes this recurring spectacle that draws a significant audience throughout the year.

The fireworks are launched from a breakwater directly across from the beach. The fireworks display spanning the entire 260m length of the breakwater is truly impressive. Among the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 highlights, Atami offers a unique experience.

Part of the charm of Atami's fireworks is the atmosphere that makes them appear as if they're being launched from underwater, with reflections on the water's surface enhancing their beauty. This makes it a standout destination for the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 season.

Atami has many Japanese traditional hotels with popular hot springs, so it's also recommended to enjoy the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 combined with an overnight stay.

Tatsunokuchi Cherry Blossom Festival

Tatsunokuchi Cherry Blossom Festival
Source:KANKOU IBARAKI

When thinking of spring seasonal traditions in Japan, cherry blossoms come to mind. The Tatsunoguchi Cherry Blossom Festival is held annually at Tatsunokuchi Waterfront Park to coincide with the cherry blossom bloom. As part of the festival, fireworks can also be enjoyed on the 29th, making it an exceptional Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 experience.

The sight of fireworks rising above the illuminated full-bloom cherry blossoms is gorgeously magical. The opportunity to see the collaboration between cherry blossoms and fireworks is rare, so I'm looking forward to it too. Please take this opportunity to enjoy this uniquely Japanese spectacular view as part of the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 celebrations.

During the Cherry Blossom Festival period, they also have illuminations called "Bamboo Lights," where bamboo is pierced with holes and lit up. When you come to see the fireworks, please also enjoy the nighttime atmosphere with these special illuminations that enhance the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 experience.

April 2025 Tokyo Fireworks Events Worth Noting

While no fireworks events will be held in Tokyo this April, there are two luxury, rich fireworks events near the Kanto region. Both can be reached within 1-2 hours from Tokyo. The Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 season is starting just outside the city, offering tourists spectacular displays against iconic Japanese backdrops.

Mt. Fuji Fireworks VS Speedway

Mt. Fuji Fireworks VS Speedway

For motor sports enthusiasts, the must-see fireworks event is "Mt. Fuji Firework vs Fuji Speedway." The venue, Fuji Speedway, is one of Japan's major circuits where large racing events are held.

At this event, 8,000 fireworks will brilliantly illuminate the venue. The highlight is the fireworks launched along the 1.5km home straight. The sight is as powerful as racing motor cars speeding down the track. Last year's program featured a collaboration between motor cars, "Deco tora" (elaborately decorated trucks with flashy illuminations), and fireworks, so as a car enthusiast, I'm also looking forward to the details of this year's Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 program.

Since securing transportation back on the day of the event can be difficult, if you're participating in this event, I recommend booking a bus reservation along with your fireworks viewing ticket through this site: https://www.fujikyu-travel.co.jp/free2/special/fujisanhanabi_tour1.html#bus1

For those who want to enjoy the collaboration of Mt. Fuji and fireworks, the must-see event is "Mt. Fuji 2025," where you can enjoy 10,000 fireworks. The Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 calendar features this special display held at a ski resort at the foot of Mt. Fuji, making it a firework festival held at the place with the most magnificent view of Mt. Fuji in Japan.

April is also when cherry blossoms bloom beautifully, so you can enjoy the feast of World Heritage-listed Mt. Fuji, cherry blossoms, and fireworks together.

At the event venue, before the fireworks begin, there will be shows featuring Japanese food, such as "Mochitsuki," a uniquely Japanese rice cake making event, and a tuna cutting show. This makes it a recommended event for those interested in Japanese cuisine as well.

Notable Tokyo Fireworks Events in May 2025

When May arrives, Tokyo hosts several exciting fireworks events. The charm of May events is enjoying fireworks in warm, comfortable weather. With fewer rainy days, May offers ideal conditions for fireworks viewing, which is why many fireworks events are held throughout the Kanto region.

Adachi Fireworks

Adachi Fireworks

The "Adachi Fireworks Festival" is the first fireworks festival of Tokyo's summer season. Previously held in July, it was moved to May last year due to recent extreme heat and weather concerns.

The highlight of the Adachi Fireworks Festival is its "high density fireworks," where 13,000 fireworks are launched within just one hour. The finale is particularly spectacular, with the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 illuminating Tokyo's sky in brilliant colors.

Fireworks events in Tokyo typically become crowded from the surrounding stations to the riverside areas. For those who wish to enjoy the show while seated comfortably, securing paid viewing seats is recommended.

STAR ISLAND

STAR ISLAND

While fireworks have been cherished as a Japanese summer seasonal tradition for generations, a new futuristic fireworks event opens in Odaiba in May.

"STAR ISLAND" is described as "Futuristic Fireworks Entertainment," featuring drones and laser displays alongside traditional fireworks. With dancer performances and immersive music, these fireworks represent an artistic fusion of tradition, human performance, and cutting-edge technology. The Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 at STAR ISLAND promises to be a truly innovative experience.

Before the fireworks begin, there are musical performances and shows by artists and performers, so be sure to arrive at the venue early to fully enjoy all the entertainment.

Mishima Skywalk Night Skywalk

Mishima Skywalk Night Skywalk
Source:Official website

"Mishima Skywalk" is Japan's longest suspension bridge at 400 meters. It offers breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay.

Every year, Mishima Skywalk hosts a "Night Skywalk" event allowing visitors to walk across the bridge at night. The finale features spectacular fireworks. The fireworks launched from below the bridge create an impressive display. A unique aspect of the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 at Mishima Skywalk is viewing fireworks from an elevated position when they're launched from below. (Note: Viewing is from around the bridge entrance, not from the bridge itself.)

As it's close to Hakone, combining this event with a Hakone sightseeing plan is also recommended.

Kanuma Satsuki Festival Sponsorship: Satsuki Gourmet Fair & Fireworks

Kanuma Satsuki Festival Sponsorship

Kanuma City in Ibaraki Prefecture is known as a production center for Azaleas called "Satsuki." Every year in May, Kanuma City holds the "Satsuki Festival" to coincide with the blooming of Satsuki in May. On the first evening of the festival, fireworks light up the venue, creating a spectacular display that will remind you of the popular Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 coming later this year.

The festival features exhibitions of Satsuki grown by enthusiasts from across the country, and sales of 10,000 Satsuki seedlings. Satsuki can be grown in small pots, making them popular as traditional Japanese potted plants called "Bonsai." The exhibition of Satsuki Bonsai grown by enthusiasts is full of originality and is an event I look forward to every year.

Kanuma Country Club (Golf Course) holds a fireworks event as one of the sponsorship events for the Kanuma Satsuki Festival. The "Shakudama," which expands to a diameter of 300m, is a highlight of Japanese fireworks and a must-see spectacle reminiscent of what visitors can expect at the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025.

While the fireworks can be viewed from around Niregi Station, I recommend watching from the Golf Course venue. The fireworks launched up close offer a powerful spectacle. Additionally, the 10,000 yen ticket includes a food and alcohol buffet, allowing you to enjoy the fireworks while dining.

Notable Fireworks Events in Tokyo Area in June 2025

In June, a fireworks event will be held in Yokohama City, next to Tokyo. The charm of Yokohama, a port city, is the collaboration between the beautiful nighttime cityscape and fireworks. It's close to Tokyo, so if you want to see fireworks before the grand Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025, why not spend an evening in Yokohama?

Yokohama Night Flowers 2025

Yokohama Night Flowers 2025
Source:Official website

At Yokohama's port "Minatomirai," fireworks events are held every month. Although the duration is short at just 5 minutes, the fireworks shining amid the magnificent night view of Yokohama's cityscape look like flowers blooming in the night sky, true to the event's name.

The highlight of "Yokohama Night Flowers" is the "Star Mine," fireworks continuously launched from the ground simultaneously with large fireworks being launched into the sky. These consecutively launched fireworks are usually reserved for the climax of festivals, but at this event, you can enjoy the intensity of a climax condensed into 5 minutes.

Minatomirai is a multi-purpose facility where you can enjoy shopping, and art and music events are frequently held. The scenery is also beautiful, so I recommend exploring the cityscape before the fireworks.

- Dates: May 17, 24, 2025, 19:00~ (Events held periodically until September)
- Venue: Minatomirai, June 21 (Shinko Futo)

Yokohama Port Opening Festival: Beam Spectacle in Harbor

Yokohama Port Opening Festival
Source:Yokohama Keizai Shimbun

June 2nd is the opening day of Yokohama Port. The "Yokohama Port Opening Festival" is held annually to commemorate this opening. On the final day's finale, 3,000 fireworks light up the venue in a spectacular display.

You can enjoy the fireworks from anywhere around the port, but my recommended viewing spot is the plaza along the coast near Yokohama Port Museum. From there, you can view the fireworks together with Yokohama's symbolic semi-circular building "Pacifico Yokohama" and the Ferris wheel. The fireworks against one of Yokohama City's most attractive night view spots create breathtaking scenery.

During the festival, local artists and community groups perform stage shows. It's also an event where you can feel the local pride of Yokohama.

Notable Fireworks Events in Tokyo for July 2025

July marks the beginning of the full-fledged fireworks season. A distinctive feature of this season is the many large-scale festivals, including the pioneering Sumida River Fireworks Festival, with over 20,000 fireworks being launched.

Sumida River Fireworks Festival

Sumida River Fireworks

When it comes to Tokyo's summer seasonal traditional events, the "Sumida River Fireworks Festival" stands out. This Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 has a long history dating back to 1733 during the Edo period and is the first fireworks event to begin in Japan. At that time, epidemics and famine were problems in Edo City.

Fireworks were launched as a memorial for those who died from disease and famine, and with a wish to ward off evil spirits.

The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is the largest fireworks event held in Tokyo, with 20,000 fireworks being launched. More than one million people gather from all over the country, making the Asakusa area very lively.

The Sumida River fireworks attract many people and can get very crowded. Pedestrian traffic jams form, and you'll likely be watching while walking. Also, after the festival ends, the area around the stations becomes very congested, so plan your schedule with plenty of time to spare.

The "Katsushika Fireworks Festival" is held near Shibamata Station in Katsushika City, an area with remaining retro streetscapes. This fireworks festival was started in 1953 to attract tourists and is bustling with 700,000 people every year.

Last year, 15,000 fireworks were launched. The charm of the Katsushika Fireworks Festival is that fireworks shows with concepts from movies and anime related to Katsushika City are presented in several stages. Last year, fireworks based on "Captain Tsubasa" and "Beyblade" were launched.

If you want to watch at a leisurely pace, securing paid seats is recommended.

Oyama Summer Festival

The "Oyama Summer Festival" is a historical firework festival that has continued since 1950. Although it is held in a rural area that takes about 2 hours by train from Tokyo, it is one of Japan's largest firework festivals where 20,000 fireworks light up the sky. This spectacular Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 promises to be an unforgettable experience for all visitors.

Since last year, in addition to traditional fireworks, a drone light show has also been incorporated into the program. If you sit in the paid seating area, you can enjoy the powerful fireworks up close to the launch site.

The day before, there is also an event where you can enjoy local specialties and the traditional festival dance "Bon dance." Please enjoy from the day before!

Moka City Summer Festival Grand Fireworks Show

Moka City Summer Festival Grand Fireworks Show
Source:PR TIMES

Moka City is a town that values traditions where as many as five large summer festivals are held in summer. In particular, the "Moka City Summer Festival" is large in scale and has been selected as one of the Top 100 Japanese festivals. At the festival, elaborately decorated push carts called "Dashi" and "Mikoshi" (portable shrines that carry deities around the area) enliven the venue.

The Moka City Summer Festival features 20,000 fireworks illuminating the night sky. The fireworks that rise with Dashi and Mikoshi in the background evoke the emotional atmosphere of Japan. Although it's somewhat distant from Tokyo, it's a festival I confidently recommend where you can experience the charm of local culture.

The Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 calendar would be incomplete without mentioning this spectacular celebration.

Notable Fireworks Events in Tokyo in August 2025

August is the month with the most firework festivals held throughout the year. Many fireworks are launched as part of traditional festivals that have taken root in local communities, and venues are crowded with many people.

Recently, more events have installed paid viewing seats to alleviate congestion. If you want to watch fireworks up close and at leisure, paid viewing seats are recommended. The Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 season reaches its peak during this month.

Tokyo Fireworks Festivals

Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival

Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival
Source:Official website

The "Jingu Gaien Firework Festival" is a firework festival held at a stadium in the outer garden of "Meiji Jingu," a shrine that spreads in the center of the city.

The charm of the Jingu Gaien Firework Festival is the live performances by idols and singers that unfold along with the fireworks launched in front of the venue.

Since they are launched at a very close distance right in front of the stadium, you can experience the realism of the sound of fireworks being launched and the smell of smoke. In particular, the starmine launched continuously at the end is very powerful. (Fireworks are launched from the Jingu Stadium venue.)

This is also a recommended festival for those who want to enjoy performances by Japanese singers and fireworks at the same time. This event is a highlight of the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 calendar, combining music and pyrotechnics in a unique urban setting.

Edo River Fireworks Festival

Edo River Fireworks Festival

Many firework festivals often have a program that lasts over 90 minutes, but at the "Edo River Fireworks Festival," you can enjoy 14,000 impressive fireworks launched within a condensed one-hour timeframe.

Particularly spectacular are the opening sequence, where 1,000 fireworks are launched simultaneously within 5 seconds, and the finale featuring "Kamuro" fireworks, where the sparks rain down from explosions in the sky—both are truly breathtaking at this Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025.

While machine-controlled automatic launches have become increasingly common at recent fireworks displays, the Edo River Fireworks Festival is handled by "Kagiya," a Fireworks specialist group with a 360-year history known to virtually every Japanese person.

"Kagiya" is also a familiar cheer shouted when fireworks launch. When you attend the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025, be sure to join in by shouting "Kagiya!" as the fireworks soar into the sky.

Itabashi Fireworks Festival

The "Itabashi Fireworks Festival," held on the banks of the Ara River, is simultaneously held with Toda City's fireworks festival on the opposite riverbank for two or more days each year. Combined, the two venues launch 15,000 fireworks, allowing the audience to enjoy a three-dimensional display from both front and back during this spectacular Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025.

The highlight of the Ara River Fireworks Festival is the "Niagara" set piece that spans 300 meters in length. The sight of flames streaming like a waterfall from suspended fireworks is incredibly beautiful. Even as a fireworks enthusiast, I rarely get to see a Niagara exceeding 100 meters—it's a must-see at this Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025!

For the festival finale, 20,000 fireworks are launched continuously over a short span of 25 minutes. The sight of large "shakudama" fireworks spanning 300 meters blooming in succession is a must-see. Additionally, the beautiful nighttime scenery of Minatomirai and the mystical nighttime ocean enhance the allure of the fireworks at this Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025.

This is one of the most concentrated fireworks displays in Japan, with many fireworks launched in a very condensed timeframe, making it highly recommended for those who want to experience powerful fireworks at the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025.

The spectacular scene where 50 consecutive Shakudama shells with diameters exceeding 100 meters are launched is truly breathtaking.

In recent years, fireworks synchronized with music have become common at many venues, but it was the Chofu Fireworks Festival that pioneered this concept in Japan. Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025: October Highlights

You can still enjoy fireworks in Tokyo during October. From the fireworks festival that takes place on both sides of the Tama River to a festival featuring the largest fireworks in Japan, the lineup is just as impressive as summer events.

This event features a total of 16,000 fireworks, and because they are launched from two locations, visitors can enjoy a three-dimensional fireworks experience. The Star Mine display, launched across a 600-meter stretch, is breathtakingly powerful. The finale featuring Shakudama shells spanning 300 meters is also a must-see!

The Tamagawa Fireworks Festival is held simultaneously with the Setagaya City Tamagawa Fireworks Festival introduced earlier. This festival features attractive performances using the long riverside area, with 6,000 of the total 16,000 fireworks being launched from this side of the river.

While this fireworks festival is grandly held across two cities, my recommended viewing spot is around Tamagawa Yuen Park, slightly downstream from the main venue. You can enjoy the display away from the crowds. As this event offers many paid seating options, viewing from these seats is also recommended.

The highlight of the Konosu Fireworks Festival is the "Shou Yonshakudama," a Guinness World Record-holding firework that's among the largest in the world. This massive Shakudama, measuring 120 cm in length, ascends to a height of 800 meters when launched and creates a firework display with a diameter of 800 meters. This size of firework can only be seen in two locations in Japan, including Konosu, so many people from all over the country gather to witness the Shou Yonshakudama.

When the Shou Yonshakudama is launched, a total of 300 consecutive fireworks, including other varieties, are set off. Tokyo Fireworks Events Highlights in December 2025

The average nighttime temperature in Tokyo in December drops to around 10°C (50°F), making it rather chilly, but the cold nights also make the air clearer, allowing you to enjoy the fireworks with even more beauty. Winter fireworks leading up to Christmas and New Year create a romantic atmosphere different from summer displays at the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025.

Odaiba Rainbow Fireworks

Odaiba Rainbow Fireworks
Source:Wikipedia

Every year in December, fireworks are launched on Saturdays at Odaiba. Although the display lasts only 5 minutes, it creates a romantic and festive Christmas atmosphere. The view of fireworks against Odaiba's symbol, the Rainbow Bridge, offers a spectacular and romantic scene for the audience.

My recommended viewing spot is around DiverCity. The collaboration between Odaiba's Statue of Liberty and the fireworks creates a breathtaking view. You can also watch the fireworks near DiverCity's symbol, the Gundam statue. The powerful Gundam alongside the fireworks is one of my favorite sights at the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025.

Odaiba is also famous for its beautiful night views, making it perfect for a date!

Special Winter Fireworks Festival & Winter Yosakoi Sohzura Festival

Special Winter Fireworks Festival & Winter Yosakoi Sohzura Festival

In Ito, a tourist destination near Atami, the "Special Winter Fireworks Festival" is held every December, featuring both fireworks and "Yosakoi," a traditional Japanese dance. Yosakoi dancers perform holding "Naruko," castanet-like instruments that create rhythmic sounds, providing entertainment through both sound and movement for the audience at the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025.

The enthusiastic Yosakoi performances by local dancers create an exciting atmosphere despite the cold winter. For the finale, fireworks are launched behind the Yosakoi dancers, bringing the venue to its peak excitement. This is one of my favorite festivals where you can feel the local power and culture.

Chichibu Night Festival Fireworks

Chichibu Night Festival Fireworks
Source:Chichibu Visitors Guide

The "Chichibu Night Festival" is a festival with over 300 years of history. It has been selected as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and is a magnificent celebration.

During the festival, "Dashi" (decorative floats) parade through the streets accompanied by the lively sounds of ancient drums and flutes. The climactic sight of these Dashi climbing up steep slopes is truly spectacular. This festival allows you to experience the elegance similar to Kyoto's Gion Festival, along with Chichibu's unique power and vigor. It's a must-see for anyone interested in traditional Japanese culture.

On the evening of the first day (December 2), fireworks are launched to commemorate the festival. The collaboration between the ornate Dashi and fireworks creates a uniquely Japanese experience that has continued for generations. Visitors attending the Tokyo Fireworks Event 2025 can plan to include this historic celebration in their itinerary, as it offers one of the most authentic cultural experiences near the capital.
