Tokyo to Chiba: A One-Day Nature Itinerary in the Boso Peninsula
When you think of Tokyo, you imagine a global metropolis. It's a vast urban area that stretches as far as the eye can see, filled with many fascinating cultural experiences. Now a world-renowned tourist destination, Tokyo welcomes millions of visitors each year.
However, what's less known is that Tokyo can also serve as a starting point for enjoying Japan's majestic nature.
I have a 5-year-old daughter, and on weekends, I often want to take her to places brimming with nature.
What do locals do in such cases? We head to Chiba, where you can enjoy nature just 1-2 hours away from Tokyo.
This is also a day trip itinerary I'd like to recommend to those visiting Tokyo for sightseeing.
In this article, I'll introduce a recommended one-day trip plan to enjoy Chiba's nature, starting from Tokyo.

Recommended Areas to Enjoy Nature in Chiba Prefecture
Chiba Prefecture is vast and full of diverse attractions. However, I don't recommend the western areas that are extensions of Tokyo to tourists. Areas like Funabashi, Chiba City, Ichikawa, and Urayasu, except for Tokyo Disneyland, aren't worth going out of your way to visit.
What I want to recommend today is the Boso Peninsula. Although it takes about 2 hours by train on land, you can actually access it in just about an hour by bus using the bridge over Tokyo Bay. The view when crossing this bridge is breathtaking, offering a panoramic view of Tokyo Bay.
The Charm of Chiba's Boso Peninsula
The Boso Peninsula is a natural treasure trove easily accessible from Tokyo.
The beautiful coastline facing the Pacific Ocean offers a spectacular view of endless blue sea and white sandy beaches. When I first brought my daughter here, she was running around excitedly, collecting seashells on the beach. Seeing her innocent smile, I truly felt that this trip was the right choice.
The lush green hills are also part of the Boso Peninsula's charm. Hiking spots like Mount Nokogiri offer wonderful experiences where you can become one with nature. The view from the mountain top is breathtakingly beautiful, with views of Tokyo Bay and even Mount Fuji in the distance.
For foreigners, the Boso Peninsula is a wonderful place to enjoy typical Japanese nature and rural scenery. The peaceful rural landscape, old shrines and temples, and the warm hospitality of the people will surely create lasting memories.
For me personally, there are new discoveries every time I visit, and it's a place that always soothes my heart. Here, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, I can truly appreciate the importance of spending time slowly in nature.
How to Access the Boso Peninsula from Tokyo
Access from Tokyo to Chiba's Boso Peninsula is easier and more convenient than you might think. First, take the Sobu Line from Tokyo Station to Chiba Station, which takes about 40 minutes.
Once you arrive at Chiba Station, transfer to the Uchibo Line or Sotobo Line depending on your destination. These lines connect the attractive spots of the Boso Peninsula. The train journey itself is enjoyable, and it's interesting to get a glimpse of the daily lives of local people.
Especially when heading to the Mount Nokogiri area, I recommend using the ropeway from Hamakanaya Station. The view from the ropeway is spectacular - when I rode it with my daughter, we both exclaimed at its beauty.
For those who want to keep their budget down or want a more flexible itinerary, I recommend using highway buses. They're inexpensive and can take you to various places, and you can enjoy the scenery from the bus window. I often choose the bus when I have more time. It's because I can feel the anticipation for the Boso Peninsula building up in the relaxed flow of time.
Itinerary: A One-Day Trip from Tokyo to Chiba's Boso Peninsula
Now, let me introduce a specific itinerary. This plan is designed to cover the most efficient and attractive places based on my experience of visiting the Boso Peninsula many times.
7:00 AM - 9:00 AM Depart from Tokyo Station to Hamakanaya Station
Leaving early in the morning might be a bit challenging, but it allows you to fully enjoy the charms of the Boso Peninsula. Take the Sobu Line Rapid from Tokyo Station and transfer to the Uchibo Line at Chiba Station.
Enjoy the changing scenery from the train window during this approximately 2-hour journey to Hamakanaya Station.
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Sightseeing at Mount Nokogiri
Once you arrive at Hamakanaya Station, the Mount Nokogiri sightseeing begins. Take the ropeway from the station to the summit. The view from this ropeway is actually one of the hidden charms of the Mount Nokogiri tour. You'll be able to enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo Bay.
When you reach the summit, first visit the Great Buddha of Nihon-ji Temple. This Buddha is actually larger than the Great Buddha of Kamakura. My daughter's eyes were wide with amazement as she looked up at its overwhelming presence.
Then, head to the main attraction of Mount Nokogiri, the "Hell Peek" (Jigoku Nozoki). The view from here is truly spectacular, and on clear days, you can even see Mount Fuji beyond the Boso Peninsula. I remember being at a loss for words when I first came here, overwhelmed by the breathtaking view.
As a note of caution, the Hell Peek is on a sheer cliff, so extra care is needed, especially if you're with children. I always hold my daughter's hand tightly and enjoy the scenery while being mindful of safety.
At Mount Nokogiri, you can experience the grandeur of nature and Japan's history and culture simultaneously. It's sure to be a special time that you can never experience in Tokyo.
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM Lunch Time in Kanaya
After sightseeing at Mount Nokogiri, you'll probably be getting hungry. Let's head back to the area around Hamakanaya Station for lunch time. The big attraction of this area is the abundance of fresh seafood, allowing you to enjoy local seafood dishes.
Here, I'll introduce two recommended restaurants. Both are popular local establishments that I often visit with my family.
Recommended Restaurant 1: Hamabe

"Hamabe" is a restaurant where you can enjoy the hugely popular "Aji Fry Set Meal" in the Hamakanaya Station area. The budget is around 2,000-3,000 yen, but it's well worth it.
This exquisite aji fry, which you can never taste in Tokyo, is arguably the most delicious in the world. The juicy and fresh taste of horse mackerel encased in a crispy batter is exceptional. My daughter loves it too, and every time we come here, she begs, "Dad, I want to eat aji fry!"

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM From Hamakanaya Station to Mother Farm
After satisfying your hunger, it's time to head to the next destination, Mother Farm. The journey from here takes a bit of time, but you can relax and enjoy the scenery of the Boso Peninsula from the window.
First, take the JR Uchibo Line bound for Kisarazu from Hamakanaya Station and get off at Sanuki-machi Station. From there, transfer to the Kano-san Line bus bound for Kamiyamaji Temple and head to Mother Farm.
If the timing is right, using the direct route bus from Kimitsu Station is also convenient. You can check detailed information on the official Mother Farm website.

When you arrive at Mother Farm, vast nature and adorable animals are waiting for you.
First, I recommend enjoying the seasonal flowers. What I particularly love are the rapeseed fields in spring and the cosmos fields in autumn. The flower fields stretching as far as the eye can see are spectacular, and walking through the flowers with my daughter is always a moving experience.
Next, be sure to enjoy interacting with the animals. The animals like sheep and goats are friendly, and you can enjoy feeding and petting them. My daughter especially loves the fluffy sheep and spends a long time interacting with them every time we visit.
Mother Farm also offers experiences like milking cows, so be sure to participate. Finally, don't forget to purchase original Mother Farm products at the souvenir shop.

4:00 PM - 6:30 PM To Chiba-Minato Station
After spending enjoyable time at Mother Farm, it's time to head to Chiba-Minato Station.
First, take a bus from Mother Farm to Kimitsu Station. Once you arrive at Kimitsu Station, take the Uchibo Line to Soga Station.
At Soga Station, transfer to the Keiyo Line and head to our final destination, Chiba-Minato Station.
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Dinner at Chiba-Minato
Once you arrive at Chiba-Minato Station, it's time for dinner, which will be the finale of your journey. The great charm of this area is that you can enjoy dinner while admiring the beautiful night view of Tokyo Bay.
Here, I'll introduce two recommended restaurants. Both offer excellent cuisine and atmosphere.
Recommended Restaurant 1: PIER-01
Source: Tabelog by PIER-01
PIER-01 is a wonderful seafood Italian restaurant in the Chiba-Minato area. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is particularly attractive, with a huge aquarium, seats with a view of the night scenery outside, and terrace seats.
When I first visited here, I was overwhelmed by its sophisticated atmosphere. The colorful fish swimming in the aquarium create an illusion of being underwater.
The food is also exquisite. The creative seafood Italian dishes are a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The terrace seats with a night view are perfect for a special dinner.

Recommended Restaurant 2: Ebisuya

Ebisuya is a locally beloved restaurant that was even featured in the popular Japanese drama "The Solitary Gourmet". Here, you can enjoy "yoshoku", Western cuisine adapted to Japanese tastes.
Among the menu items, I absolutely recommend the "Butter-Grilled Fresh Salmon". The umami of fresh salmon perfectly matches the aroma of plenty of butter, and I never get tired of eating it no matter how many times I have it.

8:00 PM - 8:40 PM Return to Tokyo Station
As the finale of a wonderful day, return to Tokyo Station on the Keiyo Line. This 40-minute train journey is the perfect time to reflect on the memories of the day.
I've made it a habit to look back on the day's events with my daughter during this time. We enjoy conversations like "What was the most fun thing today?" and "Where do you want to go next?", savoring the afterglow of our journey. Even though we should be tired, we get so engrossed in talking about our fun memories that we arrive at Tokyo Station before we know it.
Other Recommended Spots on the Boso Peninsula for Day Trips
The Boso Peninsula has many wonderful spots besides the ones I've introduced. Depending on your time and interests, you might want to visit these places as well.
Kamogawa Sea World
Kamogawa Sea World is a popular aquarium representing the Boso Peninsula. The biggest attraction here is undoubtedly the orca and dolphin shows. I can't forget how excited my daughter was when I first took her here, thrilled by the orca's jump.
The sight of an orca leaping high into the air, causing a splash, is breathtaking and leaves you in awe. The acrobatic movements of the dolphins are also spectacular and captivate the audience.
You can also enjoy encounters with various sea creatures. The giant sharks seen through large acrylic panels and the schools of colorful tropical fish create an illusion of being in the sea.
Kamogawa Sea World is a valuable place where you can learn about the wonders of nature and the preciousness of life through encounters with sea creatures. It's the top tourist spot in the Boso Peninsula that can be thoroughly enjoyed not only by families but also by adults.

Nomizo Waterfall
Nomizo Waterfall is a mystical spot known as the "Kameiwa Cave". This place has recently become a popular photography spot, gaining significant attention on social media.
When I first visited here, I was breathless at its beauty. However, as it's a popular spot, it can get crowded, especially on weekends. I recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the day. Also, I suggest wearing appropriate shoes as the ground can be slippery.
Katsuura Undersea Park
Katsuura Undersea Park is a wonderful tourist spot located on the Pacific side of the Boso Peninsula. The biggest attraction of this park is undoubtedly the ability to observe the underwater scenery from the underwater observation tower.
I still vividly remember the excitement I felt when I first visited here. When I entered the underwater observation tower, I was enveloped by a strange sensation as if I were standing in the sea. From the 360-degree glass-walled observation room, you can closely observe colorful fish swimming.
Furthermore, a beautiful coastline stretches around the park. You can also enjoy the view of the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean while walking along the promenade.

Frequently Asked Questions About Day Trips to Chiba's Boso Peninsula
Finally, I'll answer some common questions about this itinerary.
Is an Early Morning Departure Necessary?
Yes, I recommend departing as early in the morning as possible. The Boso Peninsula is quite far from Tokyo, and travel time is required, so an early morning departure is ideal to fully enjoy it.
From my experience, leaving Tokyo Station around 7 AM is optimal. By doing so, you can fully enjoy the charms of the Boso Peninsula throughout the day, including the spectacular view from Mount Nokogiri and delicious seafood lunch in Kanaya.
However, if it's difficult to visit all the places, you can start a bit later by narrowing down the places to visit. For example, if you skip Mount Nokogiri and start from Mother Farm, you can still enjoy plenty with a 9 AM departure.
What Are Some Recommended Spots for Rainy Days?
There are many charms of the Boso Peninsula that can be enjoyed even on rainy days. I've visited on rainy days a few times, and it turned out to be a special experience in its own way.
First, I recommend centering your trip around Kamogawa Sea World. It has extensive indoor facilities, so you can enjoy it all day without worrying about the rain.
If you decide it's difficult to go all the way to the Boso Peninsula, I recommend changing your plans to visit the Disney Resort at Maihama Station. Both Disneyland and DisneySea are facilities that can be thoroughly enjoyed even on rainy days. DisneySea, in particular, is ideal for rainy days as it has many indoor attractions.
