Notable Hakone Events in January 2025
January features many events celebrating the New Year. If you're spending the New Year holiday period in Hakone, don't miss Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year), where you can pray for good fortune throughout the coming year.
Beyond Hatsumode, visitors can enjoy events such as marathon competitions and sunrise viewing celebrations. Please check the details below.
Hatsumode (First Shrine Visit of the Year)
Hatsumode is a traditional Japanese New Year custom where people make their first visit to a shrine or temple after January 1st to make wishes for the new year. While you can make your first shrine visit anytime after the new year begins, the general Hatsumode period is known to be from January 1st to 7th. Most people visit during "Sanganichi," the first three days of January (January 1st-3rd).
Hatsumode is an event to express gratitude for the previous year and pray for a safe and prosperous new year ahead. During these Hakone events & festivals 2025, visitors typically make wishes and purchase lucky charms called "omamori" from the shrines or temples.
Here is the general procedure for shrine visits:
[Worship Procedure]
1. Choose a shrine
2. Line up for worship
3. Put money in the offering box (5 or 10 yen coins are common)
4. Perform "nirei-nihakushu-ichirei":
Worship manner: Two bows → Two claps → One final bow
5. Make your wish silently
6. Purchase omamori (lucky charms) or omikuji (fortune slips)
Sansha Mairi (Three Shrine Pilgrimage)
Sansha Mairi is a pilgrimage to three shrines in Hakone: Hakone Shrine, Kuzuryu Shrine Jingu, and Hakone Mototsumiya. This traditional practice, part of the Hakone events & festivals 2025, has been conducted for over 800 years for various purposes such as warding off evil, bringing good fortune, finding love, and fulfilling major wishes. When visiting, it's recommended to follow the order: Hakone Shrine, Hakone Mototsumiya, and then Kuzuryu Shrine Jingu.
Notably, Hakone Mototsumiya is located at an elevation of 1,356m, offering spectacular views of Hakone town and Mt. Fuji, Japan's highest mountain. This pilgrimage is highly recommended for those seeking to fulfill significant wishes by visiting multiple shrines.

Hakone Shrine New Year Celebration Fireworks
Source: Hakone Navi
The Hakone Shrine New Year Celebration Fireworks, a highlight of Hakone events and festivals 2025, takes place annually on January 1st at Lake Ashinoko, directly in front of the shrine.
This celebratory fireworks display welcomes the New Year with approximately 1,000 fireworks illuminating the lake for about 15 minutes, starting at midnight on January 1st.
One of the most captivating aspects is that winter's crisp air allows for more vibrant colors compared to summer displays. The reflections of the fireworks on the lake's surface create magical photo opportunities, making it a must-see event among Hakone festivals 2025.
My recommended viewing spot is along the shrine's main approach. It's perfect for those who want to start their year immersed in a festive atmosphere.

Notable Hakone Events in February 2025
February features many traditional events centered around Setsubun, a celebration that drives away evil spirits and prays for health and happiness. Setsubun is a unique Japanese cultural tradition passed down through generations, so we encourage visitors to participate in these events with local residents.
Additionally, you can enjoy fireworks celebrating Setsubun, fish-themed events, and festivals praying for good harvests. Please check the details below.
Setsubun Festival & Wakasagi Festival (Hakone Shrine)
Source: Hakone Zenzan
Hakone Shrine hosts the Setsubun Festival on February 3rd and the Wakasagi Festival from early to late February.
Setsubun, held annually on February 2nd or 3rd, is a ceremony to ward off evil spirits and pray for people's health and happiness. Following this tradition, the Setsubun Festival is held to pray for protection from misfortune and abundant fishing harvests.
A unique highlight of the Setsubun Festival is the ceremony where people throw beans at someone dressed as a demon (oni) who tries to escape on water skis on Lake Ashi. While traditional Setsubun involves throwing beans while chanting "Oni wa Soto, Fuku wa Uchi" (Demons out, Fortune in), this bean-throwing ceremony on the lake is particularly rare.
The Wakasagi Festival, held from February 1st to 28th, is an event celebrating wakasagi (smelt) cuisine. Hakone Shrine serves wakasagi dishes, and visitors can enjoy fresh smelt for free.
These events are recommended for those interested in experiencing a unique Setsubun celebration or trying fresh wakasagi fish.

Setsubun Festival Celebration Fireworks Display
Source: PR TIMES
The Setsubun Festival Celebration Fireworks Display is a spectacular fireworks event held on Lake Ashi on the evening before the Setsubun Festival. As one of the premier Hakone events for 2025, approximately 2,000 fireworks will illuminate the crystal-clear winter night sky.
A unique highlight of this celebratory fireworks festival is the rare sight of fireworks opening in semicircles above the water's surface, a special feature only possible because it's conducted over the lake. Since the event takes place over the lake where there's minimal ambient light, visitors can enjoy the pure spectacle of the fireworks without any audio interference.
My recommended way to view the display is from a fireworks viewing boat departing from Lake Ashi. You can enjoy the fireworks display in a romantic atmosphere right on the lake, making it one of the most anticipated festivals in Hakone's 2025 calendar.
This event is perfect for those who want to watch fireworks from a boat or experience winter fireworks against the clear sky.

Additionally, along nearby National Route 138, you can see about 40 weeping cherry trees (Shidarezakura) with branches drooping toward the ground, making it worth visiting both locations.
I've visited during both day and night, and each offers a unique experience - the daytime offers a traditional aesthetic, while the nighttime creates a romantic atmosphere. It's perfect for those who want to enjoy the riverside cherry blossom scenery or capture nighttime cherry blossom photography.

Source:PR TIMES
Along the shores of Lake Ashi, you can find the famous "Kohan no Ipponsakura" (Lakeside Single Cherry Tree), which will be a highlight of Hakone's 2025 spring events.
This "single tree" is actually five Oshima cherry trees planted together, now about 100 years old. The five trees appear as one, hence the name "single cherry tree." Its mountain-like spreading form is a rare sight that will captivate visitors during the 2025 festivals.
The highlight is the contrast between the blue-shimmering Lake Ashi and the white cherry blossoms. When I visited on a clear day, I was able to capture photos that looked like works of art, making it a perfect addition to Hakone's 2025 event calendar.
The area also features a ropeway and restaurants, allowing visitors to enjoy other activities before or after viewing the cherry blossoms.

The Miyagino Tenno Festival, held at Suwa Shrine, is a festival praying for people's health and abundant harvests. This festival has continued since the 18th century and is held annually on July 15th.
The festival features masked dancers performing seven different types of dances. My recommendation is the final dance called "Yudate Shishimai" (Hot Water Lion Dance). During this dance, performers circle around a large cauldron of boiling water and direct the steam toward the audience. It is believed that being touched by this steam will bring good health for the year.
If you're interested in watching traditional Japanese dances or want to experience a festival alongside locals, come and receive the sacred steam at the Miyagino Tenno Festival!

Lake Festival (Kosui Festival)

The Kosui Festival, one of Hakone's signature events for 2025, is a celebratory gathering held at Lake Ashi to express gratitude to Kuzuryu Myojin, the nine-headed dragon deity who serves as the lake's guardian spirit.

Along the shoreline, visitors can participate in a traditional ritual where lantern-like lights are floated on the water as prayers, accompanied by powerful performances of traditional taiko drums by local performers.
The highlight of this spectacular Hakone festival is the magnificent fireworks display featuring approximately 5,000 fireworks launched into the night sky. The show includes unique underwater fireworks that bloom on the lake's surface and impressive starmine displays that never fail to leave spectators in awe. Food stalls line the venue, allowing visitors to enjoy local cuisine while watching the pyrotechnic show.

Notable Hakone Events & Festivals 2025 - November Highlights
In November, autumn foliage typically reaches its peak in mid-month. While October offers fall colors only at higher elevations, November brings spectacular autumn views to lower-altitude locations like Lake Ashi and Gora Park.
Beyond the autumn foliage, November offers unique events that let you experience traditional Japanese culture and special activities at hot spring facilities. Check out the following highlight:
Hakone Daimyo Procession
Source: Hakone Navi
The Hakone Daimyo Procession, held annually on November 3rd (Culture Day), is a festival that recreates life from over 260 years ago.
The Daimyo procession represents the "Sankin-kotai" system, where regional lords were required to alternatively reside in Tokyo.
The highlight of this Hakone event is its historically accurate recreation. The procession features 170 participants walking approximately 6 kilometers, including flag bearers, spear carriers, lord's attendants, and a palanquin carrying the daimyo (feudal lord).
The event's ability to transport visitors back to ancient Japan makes it particularly special. It's highly recommended for those interested in Japanese history and traditional culture.

Lake Ashi Autumn Foliage (Early November)

At Lake Ashi, visitors can enjoy the spectacular autumn foliage around the lakeside and surrounding mountains from early to mid-November.
Due to its high altitude and cooler temperatures, Lake Ashi's autumn colors begin earlier than other regions. From the Motohakone area along the lake and Hakone Onshi Park, visitors can witness breathtaking views of autumn leaves with Mount Fuji in the background on clear days.
My personal recommendation for viewing is taking a sightseeing cruise. It's a rare opportunity to observe autumn foliage from a boat. The cruise route covers multiple viewing spots, allowing you to enjoy the scenery from various angles in a single trip.
This is perfect for those who want to experience the stunning combination of autumn leaves and Mount Fuji, or enjoy the unique perspective from the water.

From personal experience, I can share that this ritual is open to everyone, making it particularly appealing for visitors.
