Since its opening in 2018, I've had the chance to visit this massive fish market several times. Each time, I'm overwhelmed by its scale and energy.

Relocated from Tsukiji, Toyosu Fish Market boasts state-of-the-art facilities and is one of the world's largest fish markets, handling about 1,200 tons of fresh fish and processed products daily. It has also become a popular tourist spot.

From the early morning tuna auctions to fresh seafood dishes and nearby attractions, the Toyosu Fish Market area has plenty to see and do.

In this article, I'll share my experiences and introduce the charm of Toyosu Fish Market and the information you should know when visiting!

What is Toyosu Fish Market?

Toyosu

Toyosu Fish Market is one of the world's largest fish markets, relocated from Tsukiji Market in October 2018. As one of the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Markets, it plays a central role in the distribution of fresh food.

When I first visited, I was impressed by its size. The facility covers a vast area of about 40 hectares and consists of a fisheries wholesale building, a fruit and vegetable building, and an administration building.

The market has introduced the latest hygiene management systems, ensuring food safety is thoroughly maintained. Also, the areas for general visitors and business operators are clearly separated, achieving a balance between tourism and market functions.

The biggest attraction of Toyosu Fish Market is experiencing the early morning tuna auctions and the lively market atmosphere.

When I first witnessed the tuna auction, I was overwhelmed by its intensity. The auctioneers' calls, the giant tuna being carried one after another, and the serious expressions of the buyers setting prices - it really makes you feel like you're at the center of Tokyo's food culture.

How to Get to Toyosu Fish Market

Toyosu Station

Access to Toyosu Fish Market is very convenient. My recommendation is to use the "Shijo-mae Station" on the Yurikamome Line. It's directly connected to the market, making it the easiest way to access. You can also reach the market in about a 15-minute walk from "Toyosu Station" on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line.

What You Should Know Before Visiting Toyosu Fish Market

Toyosu Building

There are a few things you should know to make the most of your visit to Toyosu Fish Market. First, general viewing hours are from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. The market is generally closed on Sundays, holidays, and Wednesdays, so keep this in mind.

You can best experience the charm of Toyosu Fish Market from around 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM. This is when the market is most lively, and you can experience the authentic market atmosphere. I've visited early in the morning several times, and each time I've been able to experience fresh surprises and excitement.

Many restaurants in the market close after 2:00 PM, so I recommend visiting early in the morning to fully enjoy Toyosu Fish Market.

When visiting, it's better to avoid large luggage. There are narrow passages and crowded areas in the market, so mobility is important. I recommend leaving your luggage at your hotel or using coin lockers at the station.

While Toyosu Fish Market has become more tourist-friendly with many English guides available, the main language for transactions and conversations in the market is Japanese. Having a translation app ready can help you enjoy the market atmosphere more deeply.

4 Things to Do at Toyosu Fish Market

There are several experiences I highly recommend at Toyosu Fish Market. Based on my experiences, here are four particularly recommended activities.

Take a Market Tour

Toyosu Market

The highlight of Toyosu Fish Market is undoubtedly watching the tuna auction. This is undeniably the most popular experience. Note that some areas require advance reservations. This is a unique experience you can't have at the current Tsukiji, making it a Toyosu-exclusive attraction.

Photography is allowed only in the general areas, but it's best to use flash sparingly. It's important to be considerate and not interfere with the market workers.

Also, the auctions take place early in the morning (from around 5:30 AM), so you'll need to plan from the day before. When I first visited for the viewing, I went to bed early the night before and woke up at 4:00 AM to head there. Thanks to that effort, I had a wonderful experience.

Taste Fresh Seafood

Kaisendon

The real treat at Toyosu Fish Market is tasting fresh seafood. You can enjoy authentic sushi and seafood bowls. However, compared to Tsukiji, it has become more touristy, and prices are generally higher. But the quality is undoubtedly excellent.

My recommendation is to take a market tour early in the morning and then enjoy a seafood bowl for breakfast. The taste of fresh seafood is exceptional, allowing you to experience Tokyo's morning in the best way possible.

Recommended Restaurant 1 in Toyosu: Daiwazushi

Daiwa Sushi

Daiwazushi is one of the most popular sushi restaurants in the Toyosu area. It's known for using high-quality tuna.

When I visited, I was able to taste nigiri sushi made with tuna that had been auctioned that very morning. The freshness and flavor were unforgettable.

The interior has a high-end "sushi-ya" style with only counter seats, where you can enjoy authentic sushi. The fresh fish sushi is simply exquisite, especially the taste of the tuna, which is exceptional.

The budget is around 6,000-7,000 yen per person, which is certainly not cheap. Also, as it's a popular place, there are often long queues.

However, the value is well worth the price and wait time. When I visited with a friend, we waited for about an hour, but we were satisfied that "it was worth the wait."

Reservations are not required, but note that the operating hours are early. They open at 6:00 AM but close at 1:00 PM. It's definitely worth getting up early to visit. It's expensive and you have to queue, but it's a renowned sushi restaurant that you won't regret visiting.

Recommended Restaurant 2 in Toyosu: Yamazaki

Sushi Yamazaki

Yamazaki is a sushi restaurant that moved to Toyosu Market after over 40 years of history in Tsukiji. Leveraging years of experience, they offer a selection of fresh, high-quality fish.

While their nigiri sushi is excellent, their "chirashi sushi" is also a popular menu item. Chirashi sushi is a type of sushi where various ingredients are scattered and arranged on top of sushi rice. The colorful ingredients are beautifully arranged, making it visually appealing as well.

The budget is around 3,000-4,000 yen per person, which is more reasonable than Daiwa Sushi. However, it's also very popular, so reservations are necessary.

In my experience, it's often easier to get a reservation two weeks in advance. While it requires some planning to visit, it's well worth the effort.

Buy Souvenirs

Senkyaku Banrai

The shopping experience at Toyosu Fish Market is not to be missed. I particularly recommend the new spot "Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai" that opened outside Toyosu Market in February 2024.

Here, you can purchase various souvenirs, including Toyosu original sweets and sake. While prices are a bit high as it caters to tourists, there's also a great selection of restaurants.

When choosing souvenirs, I recommend selecting items that have a long shelf life. Dried goods, processed products, and condiments are good choices. These reflect Tokyo's food culture, can be preserved for a long time, and are recommended items for foreign visitors.

Enjoy the View from the Observation Deck

Toyosu at Night

The charm of Toyosu Fish Market extends beyond the market itself. From the rooftop green space and the observation deck of Senkyaku Banrai, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Toyosu.

What I particularly like is the view at dusk. The sight of the sun setting over Tokyo Bay and the surrounding buildings gradually lighting up is breathtakingly beautiful.

The observation deck is open at night, making it a recommended spot for dates. When I visited with my partner, we were able to slowly unwind from the day's fatigue while looking at the night view. You can spend a quiet and relaxing time, in contrast to the lively market atmosphere during the day.

Taking a break on this observation deck, enjoying the view of Tokyo after touring Toyosu Fish Market, would be a perfect way to conclude your visit.

Toyosu Gururi Park

Toyosu Gururi Park

Toyosu Gururi Park is a promenade and green space that circles Toyosu Fish Market. Here, you can enjoy wonderful views of Tokyo Bay.

What I particularly like about this park is its sense of openness. You can enjoy a leisurely walk away from the hustle and bustle of the market. With benches and rest areas placed throughout, it's perfect for a relaxed time.

The charm of this park changes dramatically from day to night. During the day, it's bustling with people enjoying picnics while watching boats come and go in Tokyo Bay. I once visited with friends, bringing a packed lunch, and had a really enjoyable time.

At night, you can admire the illuminated market and Rainbow Bridge. Especially, the sight of the Ferris wheel shining against the backdrop of the night view is spectacular. It's a recommended spot for couples taking a walk or having a night picnic.
