Food Published: Oct 11, 2024

Ueno is famous as a cultural center with many museums and art galleries. In particular, Ueno Park is home to the Tokyo National Museum and Ueno Zoo, attracting many tourists.

But Ueno's appeal isn't just that. In fact, Ueno is also a treasure trove of delicious food.

I first visited Ueno during my college years. At that time, my purpose was just to tour the museums, but before I knew it, I found myself bar-hopping along the lively streets of Ameyoko and enjoying delicious street food, which I still enjoy to this day.

In this article, I'll introduce you to the delicious food you can enjoy in Ueno, which I've discovered over many years. From Tokyo-style street food to cuisine from around the world, Ueno has places to enjoy various meals.

I particularly want you to pay attention to the shopping street called "Ameyoko" (Ame-yoko). Here, there are many delicious foods you can eat while walking.

Please use this article as a reference to fully enjoy the delicious food in Ueno!

What Kind of Gourmet Food Can You Find in Ueno?

Ueno Station

Ueno's gourmet scene is truly diverse, offering a variety of taste experiences.

It's no exaggeration to say that Ameyoko is the center of Ueno's gourmet scene. Here, you can find not only Tokyo's standard street foods like menchi-katsu, croquettes, and takoyaki, but also a range of international cuisines, including Chinese. The reason I've been coming here since my student days is because I'm fascinated by this diversity.

Many Korean-style barbecue restaurants are also lined up around Ameyoko. If you want to experience barbecue culture, this is a spot you should definitely visit.

The restaurants in Ueno are characterized by a more casual atmosphere. However, for those who want to enjoy a more refined atmosphere, I recommend the restaurants in Marui or Parco.

The key to enjoying Ueno's gourmet food is to experience a wide range from casual, accessible shops to slightly more luxurious restaurants. By doing so, you can fully savor Ueno's diverse food culture.

5 Must-Try Street Foods in Ameyoko Area, Ueno

Ameyoko

Ameyoko and its surroundings are truly rich in street food. Here, I'll introduce you to 5 shops that I've visited many times and can confidently recommend.

Niku no Ohyama

Niku no Ohyama is a long-established meat wholesale store founded in 1932. It's characterized by high quality backed by years of history and experience, and reasonable prices. The reason I've been coming here since my student days is precisely this excellent balance of "high quality" and "affordable price".

The store consists of two areas: a retail shop with a standing corner and an in-store restaurant. As someone who loves street food, I prefer the standing corner. The charm is that you can enjoy delicious meat dishes on the spot.

Their famous menchi-katsu comes in three types (150 yen, 220 yen, 420 yen), with different ingredients and manufacturing methods depending on the price. I recommend the 220 yen menchi-katsu. The balance between price and taste is perfect, and it's ideal for eating while walking around Ameyoko.

Also, the popular "addictive croquette" is even more reasonable at 80 yen. The combination of the crispy coating and the smooth potato inside is excellent, and I often end up eating several.

Minatoya

Minatoya is a popular shop in Ameyoko where you can enjoy takoyaki and seafood bowls. Especially, their takoyaki is extremely popular as street food.

You can buy takoyaki for 300 yen for 4 pieces, which is a very reasonable price for central Tokyo. What's particularly noteworthy is the taste. The texture is perfect with a crispy outside and a gooey inside, and the octopus inside is large and satisfying.

Also, one of Minatoya's charms is that you can buy relatively quickly even if there's a line. The waiting time is characteristically short.

The moment of biting into hot takoyaki while walking around Ameyoko is truly blissful. Please try Minatoya's takoyaki during your Ueno sightseeing.

Kacchan

Kacchan is a popular tempura restaurant in Ameyoko. It has a standing space on the first floor and table seats on the second floor, which is attractive as you can use it according to the situation.

I particularly like the standing space on the first floor. I feel that the casual atmosphere fits perfectly with the lively atmosphere of Ameyoko.

The "Senbero Set" (1,200 yen), available only on the first floor, is excellent value for money. It includes a tempura platter or a daily special dish, and up to 4 drinks.

I often use it on my way home from work, and this set is satisfying enough. The tempura batter is crispy and not too oily. It goes perfectly with sake or shochu.

The charm of Kacchan is that you can enjoy authentic tempura taste in a casual atmosphere. The casual and warm atmosphere, different from high-end tempura restaurants, makes you feel the Ameyoko-ness. It's absolutely recommended for those who want to casually enjoy tempura and drinks in Ameyoko.

Uokusa

Source: Tabelog by 036ike

Uokusa is a standing bar specializing in seafood dishes and Japanese sake.

The characteristic system of this store is the rule of up to 2 drinks in 30 minutes. This might seem restrictive at first glance, but I believe this system actually maximizes Uokusa's charm.

I think it's an ideal system to experience Tokyo's "bar hopping" culture, enjoying delicious food and drinks in a short time.

The menu mainly consists of fresh seafood, with many items that can be casually enjoyed for under 1,000 yen. My recommendation is the assorted sashimi platter. The types of fish vary depending on the day, but it's always fresh and delicious.

Uokusa is ideal to visit as a finale to your food tour in Ameyoko. You can relieve the fatigue of the day with delicious seafood and drinks.

Kimi Noen

Kimi Noen
Source: Tabelog by Mamirie

Kimi Noen is a Japanese tea specialty store in the Ameyoko area. Not only can you experience the depth of Japanese tea, but you can also enjoy various sweets made with matcha. It's a hidden gem in Ueno.

The popular menu item is undoubtedly the matcha soft serve ice cream. It's perfect as a street food and loved by many tourists. The price is 350 yen, and you can choose between cone type and cup type. I always choose the cup type.

The charm of the matcha soft serve ice cream lies in its richness. The moment you put it in your mouth, the deep aroma and sweetness of matcha spreads. However, it's never too sweet, and you can clearly taste the bitterness of matcha, creating a perfect balance.

Eating this cold and rich matcha soft serve ice cream while walking around Ameyoko on a hot summer day is one of my pleasures.

Also, you can purchase various types of Japanese tea in the store. It's popular as a souvenir, and I often use it as a gift for friends and family. The staff have deep knowledge about Japanese tea and will kindly advise you according to your preferences and budget.

Kimi Noen is a wonderful spot where you can enjoy Japan's traditional tea culture in a modern form. Please make sure to stop by when sightseeing in Ueno.

5 International Cuisines You Can Enjoy in Ueno

Ueno is not only a place where you can enjoy traditional Japanese food culture, but also a place where you can savor cuisines from around the world.

Here, I'll introduce 5 international cuisine restaurants that I've visited many times and can confidently recommend. Try experiencing Ueno's diverse food culture at these establishments.

Heisei Fuku Jun

Heisei Fuku Jun is a Chinese restaurant in the Ameyoko area that has the atmosphere of a street food stall. I first visited this store when I was craving authentic Chinese cuisine. I still vividly remember my surprise at that time.

While many Chinese restaurants in Tokyo are adapted to Japanese tastes, this place offers authentic flavors reminiscent of China.

When you enter the store, you're surrounded by an energy that makes you feel like you've wandered into a street food market in China. Chinese language flies around from the kitchen, and the aromatic smell rising from the pots stimulates your appetite. Looking at the menu, you'll be surprised to find that most dishes are priced under 1,000 yen.

The charm of Heisei Fuku Jun lies in its overwhelming authenticity. You can have an experience as if you're eating at a food stall in China while in Tokyo. The prices are also reasonable, so I absolutely recommend it for those who want to casually enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine.

Korean Food Arenmoku

Korean Food Arenmoku
Source: Tabelog by Arenmoku

Korean Food Arenmoku is a long-established restaurant in Ueno that has been serving Korean cuisine for over 30 years. I first visited this restaurant shortly after returning from a trip to Korea. I was craving authentic flavors and visited based on a friend's recommendation, but I was surprised by the authenticity of the taste.

When you enter the restaurant, the traditional Korean decorations and Korean songs playing in the background create an atmosphere as if you're in Korea. Looking at the menu, you'll find not only Korean-style barbecue like samgyeopsal but also a rich variety of side dishes.

My recommendation is, of course, the samgyeopsal. The joy of grilling thick slices of pork belly yourself and eating them with fresh vegetables is exceptional. The pajeon (Korean pancake) is also exquisite. You can enjoy the texture of crispy outside and chewy inside, and it goes perfectly with the special sauce.

The charm of Korean Food Arenmoku lies not only in its authentic taste but also in its long operating hours. It's open from 2 PM until late at night, so you can enjoy it for dinner, a late lunch, or even a late-night meal.

I highly recommend this restaurant not only to those who love Korean cuisine but also to those who want to experience authentic flavors.

A HAAN THAI is an authentic Thai restaurant located near Ueno Okachimachi Station.

The menu is extensive, allowing you to enjoy a wide range of Thai dishes from standards to rare specialties.

You can enjoy authentic Thai cuisine for about 1,500 yen per person for lunch and about 4,000 yen per person for dinner. Personally, I feel the lunch is particularly good value. The portions are ample and the taste is authentic. The cost-performance ratio is very high.

I highly recommend this restaurant not only to those who love Thai cuisine but also to those who want to embark on a new taste adventure.

Oskar Kebab is a shop in Ameyoko where you can enjoy authentic kebab dishes. I happened to find it while walking around Ameyoko, and I was surprised by the authenticity of its taste.

The menu is simple, but you can enjoy authentic flavors in every dish. It's also attractive that you can casually enjoy kebabs for under 1,000 yen.

There are other kebab shops in Ameyoko, but as I've visited many times, Oskar Kebab has become my favorite in terms of price and taste balance. I hope you'll visit at least once.

KHANA KHAZA is an Indian restaurant in the Okachimachi area.

I especially recommend their lunch, where you can enjoy Indian curry for under 1,000 yen. It's a great deal with naan or rice, salad, and a drink included in the set. There's also a wide variety of curry types, so you can enjoy a different taste each time.

I highly recommend this restaurant not only to those who love Indian cuisine but also to those who want to enjoy authentic curry at an affordable price.

Other Gourmet Spots in Ueno

There are many attractive gourmet spots in Ueno besides Ameyoko and its surroundings. Here, I'll introduce three spots that I personally like. These places allow you to enjoy Ueno's gourmet food in a different atmosphere from Ameyoko.

Ueno Marui

Ueno Marui

Ueno Marui is a shopping mall located right next to Ueno Station.

The charm of this shopping mall is that restaurants and sweets shops are scattered on the basement, first floor, and ninth floor. I particularly like the sweets corner on the first floor. It's well-stocked with cakes from famous patisseries and seasonal sweets, offering so many choices it's hard to decide.

Another big attraction here is that you can enjoy meals regardless of the weather. Even on rainy days or hot summer days when it's tough to walk around outside, you can comfortably enjoy Ueno's gourmet food.

PARCO_ya Ueno

PARCO_ya Ueno is a shopping mall about a 10-minute walk from Ueno Station.

The charm of this shopping mall is that there are cafes on each floor, and on the 6th floor, there's a full-fledged restaurant area. Overall, there are many refined restaurants, allowing you to enjoy a different atmosphere from other areas in Ueno.

I recommend it for those who want to enjoy a meal in a relaxed space, in contrast to the lively atmosphere of Ameyoko.

ecute Ueno is a shopping mall directly connected to Ueno Station.

The greatest charm of this shopping mall lies in its convenience. Being directly connected to Ueno Station, you can easily stop by while waiting for a train or when you're in a hurry. It's also characterized by having not only restaurants but also a rich variety of take-out bento boxes and sweets.

During the tour, you'll visit hidden gem shops that are famous among locals but not well-known to tourists.

I recommend using this tour after enjoying various Ueno gourmet foods introduced in this article.
