Which Season Should You Visit Ueno?

Ueno Ameyoko in the Morning

Ueno is a charming area where Tokyo's culture and history are concentrated. I've visited many times, but each time I make new discoveries and find myself drawn into its charm.

Centered around Ueno Park, its characteristic is the gathering of various cultural facilities such as art museums, museums, temples and shrines, and the zoo. Also, shopping and food hopping in Ameyoko are unique ways to enjoy Ueno.

These main attractions can actually be enjoyed regardless of the season. However, what I particularly recommend is spring. The cherry blossoms in Ueno Park are known as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo.

From late March to early April, when the entire park is dyed in cherry blossom pink, the sight is spectacular. If you visit Ueno during this time, you can experience the charm of this area to the fullest.

For me personally, it has become an annual event to view cherry blossoms in Ueno Park every spring. Enjoying a picnic with friends and family under the cherry blossoms while observing the bustling atmosphere around is truly a spring tradition in Tokyo.

Most Recommended Season: Ueno in Spring

Ueno Park Sakura

From my experience, spring is when Ueno shows its most beautiful face throughout the year. Especially the cherry blossoms in Ueno Park are at their best from late March to early April. However, the blooming time may vary slightly depending on the climate of that year, so I recommend checking the latest bloom forecast when visiting.

Ueno Park

Sakura Gates at Ueno Park

Ueno Park is famous for its breathtaking tunnel of cherry blossoms created by about 1,200 trees. When I first saw this sight, I was taken aback by its beauty.

Various types of cherry blossoms are planted in the park, including Somei Yoshino, mountain cherry blossoms, and double-flowered cherry blossoms, allowing you to enjoy their individual characteristics.

Many people spread out sheets on the park's lawn area to enjoy cherry blossom viewing. For me too, having a picnic here with friends has become an annual pleasure.

At night, the cherry blossoms are illuminated, allowing you to enjoy a different, fantastical atmosphere from daytime. Walking under the night cherry blossoms feels like wandering into a different world.

Temples and Shrines in Ueno Park

Kaneiji

There are many temples and shrines scattered throughout Ueno Park, and in spring, you can enjoy the collaboration of these historical buildings with cherry blossoms. Particularly impressive is the harmony between the five-story pagoda of Kaneiji Temple and the cherry blossoms. The scenery created by traditional Japanese architecture and full-bloom cherry blossoms is truly like a painting.

My favorites are Kiyomizu Kannon-do and Ueno Toshogu Shrine. The combination of these temples and shrines with cherry blossoms creates a unique view where Tokyo's traditional culture and natural beauty merge. Also, Gojo Tenjin Shrine has early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms, allowing you to enjoy cherry blossoms from a slightly earlier time.

Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival: A Highlight Event of Ueno's Spring

Beautiful Sakura at Ueno Park

The Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival, held for about a week from mid-March to early April every year, can be called a spring tradition in Ueno. In 2024, it was held from March 11 to April 16. This large-scale cherry blossom festival held throughout Ueno Park is popular not only with locals but also with tourists.

What I particularly look forward to is the night cherry blossom illumination event. When the sun sets, the cherry trees are illuminated, allowing you to enjoy a completely different, fantastical atmosphere from daytime. Walking through the park at night, passing under the illuminated cherry blossoms, is a strange sensation.

During the festival period, food stalls and street vendors line up in the park, further enhancing the festive atmosphere. Enjoying traditional stall food while strolling under the cherry blossoms is one of the moments when I feel Tokyo's spring the most.

Spring Gourmet in Ueno

Yakitori

When visiting Ueno in spring, gourmet food is also a big part of the enjoyment. At the "Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival," various food stalls appear, further enhancing the cherry blossom viewing atmosphere. My recommendations are yakitori and yakisoba. Eating while enjoying the fragrant smell unique to food stalls and watching the cooking process right in front of you is exceptional.

Also, I recommend buying a spring bento box at Ueno Station and enjoying "hanami" in the park. Hanami is a traditional Tokyo custom of enjoying cherry blossom viewing while eating lunch boxes and drinking under cherry trees.

Many beautiful spring-limited bento boxes are sold in the station and surrounding department stores. Taking these bento boxes to the park and having a picnic under the cherry blossoms is one of the experiences where you can feel Tokyo's spring the most.

For me personally, it has become an annual event to bring hanami bento boxes with friends and have a picnic in Ueno Park. The taste of the bento eaten under the cherry blossoms is exceptional, and it's a moment when I can really feel the arrival of spring.

Tips for Spring Sightseeing in Ueno

Sakura at Shinobazu Pond

Here are some tips to maximize your enjoyment of Ueno in spring. First, the cherry blossom viewing season is especially crowded on weekends, so I recommend visiting on weekdays or early mornings if possible. I myself have taken a stroll in Ueno Park early in the morning, and the beauty of the cherry blossoms illuminated by the morning sun was exceptional, with fewer people around.

Try to arrive early at popular spots. Especially the cherry blossom avenue in Ueno Onshi Park and around temples and shrines are highly popular, so I recommend early visits for those who want to enjoy them leisurely.

Also, I recommend checking the weather forecast and cherry blossom forecast in advance and making flexible plans. Since the cherry blossom blooming period is affected by the weather, checking the latest information allows you to visit at the best timing.

Finally, don't forget to cherish the trees and flowers. It's strictly prohibited to break branches or pick flowers. Let's observe the beautiful cherry blossoms while maintaining manners so that we can pass them on to the next generation.

Second Most Recommended Season: Ueno in Autumn

Ueno in Autumn

After spring, the season I recommend is Ueno in autumn. In autumn, Ueno Park is beautifully colored with fall foliage, showing a different charm from spring. Usually, the best time to see the autumn leaves is from mid-November to early December, and the sight of the park being colored in red and yellow is spectacular.

I visit Ueno every year during this time to enjoy the autumn leaves. Strolling in the calm atmosphere, different from the spring cherry blossoms, is a special experience. Also, this season has comfortable temperatures, making it suitable for leisurely touring Ueno's cultural facilities.

Recommended Autumn Foliage Spots in Ueno Park

Shinobazu Pond

Shinobazu Pond in Fall

Shinobazu Pond is a pond within Ueno Park that beautifully colors with autumn leaves. You can enjoy the scenery of autumn leaves while strolling around the pond. What's particularly impressive is the contrast between the waterfowl and the autumn leaves. The scenery of waterfowl floating on the pond surrounded by autumn leaves is very beautiful.

My recommendation is to visit at dusk. The sight of the autumn leaves illuminated by the setting sun reflecting on the water surface is indescribably beautiful. Boats are also available on the pond, so you can enjoy the autumn leaves from the lake.

Garden of the Tokyo National Museum

Tokyo National Museum

The garden of the Tokyo National Museum exudes a special charm in autumn. The contrast between the Japanese garden and the autumn leaves is beautiful, offering a wonderful place to experience the fusion of Tokyo's traditional culture and nature.

What I particularly like is the area around the small pond in the garden. The pond surrounded by autumn leaves has stones and bridges characteristic of Japanese gardens, allowing you to feel the traditional aesthetic sense.

The garden of the Tokyo National Museum is also ideal for refreshing after viewing art pieces. For me, it has become an annual pleasure to spend time leisurely enjoying the autumn leaves in this garden after visiting the museum's exhibitions. I think it's a precious place where you can simultaneously taste the beauty of Tokyo's culture and nature.

I look forward to this event every year. Not only can you taste rare sake from all over Japan, but the charm is also the abundance of gourmet booths that pair well with the alcohol. The experience of enjoying various drinks along with autumn flavors in Ueno Park, beautiful with autumn leaves, is exceptional.

In 2024, it's scheduled to be held from November 15th to 17th. When visiting Ueno in autumn, be sure to check out this event. It's a precious opportunity to experience Japan's alcohol culture.

Autumn Gourmet in Ueno

Autumn Food

When visiting Ueno in autumn, gourmet food is also a big part of the enjoyment. Especially popular in this season are dishes and sweets using sweet potatoes and chestnuts. My recommendations are roasted sweet potatoes and chestnut kinton. Other must-try dishes include those using matsutake mushrooms and Pacific saury, famous as autumn flavors.

Many restaurants in commercial facilities such as "Ueno Marui" and "PARCO_ya Ueno" in the Ueno area offer "limited-time menus" using these seasonal ingredients.

Every year, I enjoy visiting these facilities with friends to try the autumn-limited menus. Especially delicious are the chestnut desserts and grilled Pacific saury.

When visiting Ueno in autumn, I recommend dropping by these commercial facilities. They're great spots where you can enjoy seasonal flavors while also shopping.

Tips for Autumn Sightseeing in Ueno

Fall Ueno Park

Here are some tips to maximize your enjoyment of Ueno in autumn. First, as it gets crowded during the autumn foliage season, I recommend visiting early in the morning or on weekdays. I myself have taken a stroll in Ueno Park early in the morning, and the beauty of the autumn leaves illuminated by the morning sun was exceptional, with fewer people around.

However, recently, tourist spots in Tokyo tend to be crowded all the time. So, it's best to be prepared for some level of crowding when visiting.

In Ueno, the autumn leaves are usually at their best from mid-November to early December. However, as the peak viewing time can change depending on the weather, I recommend checking information in advance.

Every year, I check the autumn foliage status on the official website of Ueno Park and local weather forecasts before visiting.

Also, don't forget to prepare for cold weather when viewing autumn leaves. It can get chilly especially in the morning and evening, so it's reassuring to bring an extra layer to wear.

Ueno in Summer: Enjoying Cool Cultural Facilities and Festivals

Ueno in Summer

Summer in Tokyo is extremely hot, and you might find yourself sweating profusely just from walking outside, but Ueno has many attractions that can make you forget about the heat.

Ueno Park is rich in art museums and museums, which is a great feature as you can leisurely enjoy art and science in cool indoor spaces.

For me, visiting Ueno's cultural facilities has become a standard practice on hot summer days. Enjoying world-class art pieces and the latest science exhibitions in air-conditioned halls is a wonderful experience that makes you forget about the summer heat.

Also, the "Ueno Summer Festival" is an event not to be missed. You can enjoy the atmosphere of Tokyo's traditional summer festival while fully experiencing Ueno's summer. I look forward to this festival every year, and participating with friends and family has become an annual event for me.

Summer Highlights in Ueno

Touring Cultural Facilities

Tokyo National Museum

Within Ueno Park, there are many cultural facilities including the Tokyo National Museum and the National Museum of Nature and Science. These facilities are air-conditioned and cool, allowing you to enjoy summer strolls comfortably.

My recommendation is to visit Ueno Zoo in the morning and then tour these cultural facilities in the afternoon. You can enjoy the contrast of seeing active animals and then experiencing art and science in quiet halls. In particular, the Japanese art collection at the Tokyo National Museum is impressive and is my favorite.

Also, these facilities often hold special exhibitions and experiential events during the summer vacation period, so it's worth checking in advance for a more fulfilling time. There are also many workshops for children, making it recommended for families.

Night at Ueno Zoo

Ueno Zoo

The "Midsummer Night's Zoo", where Ueno Zoo opens at night for about a week in mid-August every year, can be called a summer tradition in Ueno. In 2024, it was held from August 11th to 16th.

This event, where you can observe the animals' behavior different from daytime, is crowded with many visitors every year.

I've participated a few times, and the atmosphere of the zoo at night is completely different from daytime, offering a fresh experience. For example, you can see nocturnal animals moving actively and stroll through the illuminated zoo grounds.

It's especially popular among people who want to avoid the hot daytime as you can stroll through the zoo in the cool night breeze.

Summer Stall

The "Ueno Summer Festival" is a big event in Ueno Park held from mid-July to mid-August every year. In 2024, it was held from July 12th to August 12th. During the weekends of this period (Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays), many food stalls appear in the park, allowing you to enjoy street food and the atmosphere of Tokyo's traditional festivals.

I look forward to this festival every year. Just walking through the park bustling with people in yukata is enough to fully experience the atmosphere of Tokyo's summer festival.

Various events and performances are also held during the festival period. You can enjoy a wide range of events from traditional Bon dance to modern music live performances, so you never get bored no matter how many times you visit.

Summer Food in Ueno: Shaved Ice (Kakigori)

Kakigori

Shaved ice (Kakigori) is a traditional dessert representing Tokyo's summer. This cold sweet, made by finely shaving ice and topping it with syrup or condensed milk, is the ultimate comfort on a hot summer day.

During the Ueno Summer Festival period, you can enjoy shaved ice at the food stalls in the park. The shaved ice from the stalls has a simple taste and becomes a special memory along with the festival atmosphere. I feel that eating shaved ice amidst the bustle of the festival has an exceptional deliciousness.

The trick to enjoying shaved ice is to eat it as quickly as possible. The most delicious way to eat it is to enjoy the fluffy texture before it starts melting. Also, it's fun to order different flavors with friends or family and share them.

Tips for Summer Sightseeing in Ueno

Barley Tea

There are a few points to keep in mind to comfortably enjoy Ueno in summer. First, it's very hot outside, so it's important to stay hydrated regularly. I always carry a small water bottle and try to drink water about every 30 minutes.

It's also important to use shade and avoid direct sunlight. There are many large trees in Ueno Park, so I recommend moving using the tree shade. Especially around noon when the sunlight is strong, it's wise to spend time in indoor facilities.

Taking appropriate breaks in cool places is also important. Art museums and museums are air-conditioned, so you can cool down your body while enjoying the exhibitions. My favorite is the cafe at the Tokyo National Museum. Refreshing here while having a cold drink refreshes both body and mind.

Finally, I recommend allowing some flexibility in your schedule. It's easy to get tired in the heat, so make plans that aren't too strenuous. For example, visit the zoo in the morning, an art museum after lunch, and enjoy the summer festival from evening to night.

Refer to these tips and fully enjoy Ueno in summer. Don't forget to take appropriate breaks and stay hydrated, and savor the charm of Ueno's summer.

Ueno in Winter: A Quiet Season Perfect for Sightseeing

Kaneiji Temple

Winter in Ueno is a season when there are fewer tourists compared to other seasons, allowing you to quietly savor the charm of Ueno. Indeed, there might be fewer spectacular sights like cherry blossoms or autumn leaves, but in return, you can leisurely immerse yourself in Ueno's culture.

I personally love Ueno in winter. I feel that the greatest charm of this season is being able to thoroughly enjoy museums and art museums without the crowds.

Also, while it doesn't snow frequently in Tokyo, if you're lucky, you might be able to enjoy the snow-covered scenery of Ueno Park. The sight of Shinobazu Pond and temples covered in snow has a beauty like an ink wash painting.

I believe that winter in Ueno is a season when you can more deeply appreciate Tokyo's traditional culture and art. Viewing Japanese art in the quiet or seeing the preparations for the New Year at temples and shrines will be valuable experiences in understanding Tokyo's culture.

How to Enjoy Ueno in Winter

Enjoying Winter-Limited Museum Events

Ueno in Winter

There are many cultural facilities gathered in Ueno Park, such as the Tokyo National Museum and the Ueno Royal Museum. These facilities hold various special exhibitions for each season, and many attractive special exhibitions are held in winter as well.

These exhibitions are so interesting that they make you forget about the cold world outside. I feel that winter is the best season for art appreciation, as you can quietly face artworks in the quiet and warm indoor spaces.

After touring the museums, I recommend enjoying a warm drink at the cafes inside. You can spend a relaxing time immersed in the afterglow of art appreciation.

Experiencing Year-End and New Year Traditional Events

Kaneiji Temple

Ueno is an ideal place to experience traditional year-end and New Year events. In particular, the New Year's Eve bell ringing at Kaneiji Temple and the first shrine visit of the year at Ueno Toshogu Shrine are precious opportunities to feel Tokyo's traditional culture firsthand.

The New Year's Eve bell ringing is a traditional event where temple bells are rung 108 times on New Year's Eve night. This has the meaning of purifying the 108 worldly desires of humans and welcoming the new year with a refreshed feeling.

I've seen the New Year's Eve bell ringing at Kaneiji Temple, and there's an indescribable emotion in the moment when the deep resonance of the bell spreads through the night sky, enveloping the silence of the year's end.

The first shrine visit of the year refers to the first visit to a shrine in the new year. The first shrine visit at Ueno Toshogu Shrine is bustling with many people. Praying with New Year's wishes in the solemn atmosphere of the shrine is a wonderful opportunity to experience Tokyo's culture. Drawing omikuji (fortune slips) after praying is also one of the pleasures of the New Year.

Recommended Hot Gourmet Foods in Ueno's Winter

Oden

To enjoy the cold winter in Ueno, warm food is essential. Particularly recommended is oden, a staple winter dish in Tokyo.

Oden is a dish where various ingredients are simmered in a dashi broth. It's characterized by diverse ingredients such as daikon radish, eggs, konjac, and deep-fried tofu all in one pot. There are many shops offering oden scattered from Ueno Station to Okachimachi Station.

Also, there are many Chinese restaurants around Ameyoko - Okachimachi Station area, which are also essential for enjoying Ueno in winter. Especially, steaming hot meat buns are a winter staple.

Meat buns are a type of Chinese steamed bun where meat and other fillings are wrapped in wheat flour dough and steamed. With their soft exterior and juicy interior, meat buns are perfect light meals for cold winter street walks.

These warm foods further deepen the enjoyment of winter sightseeing in Ueno. Warming your body with hot food after walking in the cold outside is one of the pleasures of winter.
