Uji Perfect Guide: Immerse in Kyoto's History, Nature, and Tea Culture

Uji, with its rich nature and over 1000 years of history, is a special place for me. During the two years I spent in Kyoto as a graduate student, I visited World Heritage sites like Byodoin Temple and Ujigami Shrine, and was soothed by the scenery of the Uji River that changes with the seasons.

Above all, Uji, famous for its tea production, was a treasure trove of matcha sweets that healed the fatigue of my student life. I have many memories of Uji, such as visiting Byodoin Temple with friends and marveling at the beauty of the garden, the excitement of seeing cormorant fishing on the Uji River for the first time, and soothing my tired mind from research with Uji's matcha parfait.

Uji is also known as a place associated with the classic literature "The Tale of Genji," which fascinated me as a literature fan. Sometimes I would visit Uji alone and imagine the world of The Tale of Genji. History and literature, nature and food. Uji added color to my student life.

The autumn foliage season in Uji is exceptional. While Arashiyama is very crowded, in Uji you can enjoy the autumn leaves quietly away from the crowds. I remember the breathtaking beauty of the garden of Byodoin Temple and the scenery along the Uji River being vividly colored.

In this article, I'll introduce the charms of Uji, incorporating my experiences. Whether you're visiting World Heritage sites, enjoying nature walks, or going on a gourmet trip, you're sure to find a way to enjoy Uji that suits your travel style.

What is Uji?

Uji is an area blessed with nature and history, located south of Kyoto City. Its easy access, just about 30 minutes by train from central Kyoto, is also one of Uji's great attractions.

During my student days, I often took the train to visit Uji. The clear stream of the Uji River flows through the city, and its waterside scenery fascinates visitors. Walking while listening to the murmur of the river was one of my pleasures in Uji.

More than 1000 years ago, in the Heian period, it flourished as a villa area for aristocrats, and even now, many historical buildings remain, including Byodoin Temple, which is a characteristic of Uji.

Moreover, Uji is known as a place associated with the classic literature "The Tale of Genji," making it an unmissable place for literature fans.

And above all, Uji is renowned as a representative tea production area in Japan, and being able to taste high-quality Uji tea is a big attraction. For a tea lover like me, Uji was like heaven.

Uji can be said to be a place filled with the charms of Kyoto's nature, history, culture, and gourmet food.

There are several reasons why Uji is popular among domestic and international tourists.

First, it's a treasure trove of historical buildings designated as National Treasures and World Heritage sites, such as Byodoin Temple and Ujigami Shrine. When you see these majestic buildings in person, you realize the depth of Kyoto's history. I remember being speechless at the beauty when I first visited Byodoin Temple with my friends during my student days.

Furthermore, Uji is renowned as a representative tea production area in Japan, and being able to taste authentic Uji tea is one of its attractions.

And the natural beauty of the four seasons viewed from the walking path along the Uji River never fails to fascinate visitors. I visited many times during my student days, but I especially can't forget the beauty of the cherry blossom season and the autumn foliage season.

Unique events like cormorant fishing on the Uji River are also popular as experiences unique to Uji. I still vividly remember the night I was fascinated by the fantastical light of fire and the skill of the experienced cormorant fishers.

Food and gift shopping are also enjoyable, with a wealth of gourmet foods and sweets using matcha, as well as traditional crafts. Choosing souvenirs for friends and family is also one of the pleasures of traveling to Uji.

And above all, it's easily accessible by train from Kyoto or Osaka, making it one of the reasons for its popularity as it can be enjoyed on a casual day trip.

When Should You Visit Uji?

While Uji can be enjoyed throughout the year, I especially recommend the autumn foliage season. Around November, Uji is colored with vivid autumn leaves and is very beautiful.

While Arashiyama is the representative of Kyoto's autumn, I prefer Uji where you can enjoy the autumn leaves quietly away from the crowds. Please enjoy Uji's autumn by all means. I'm sure you'll be moved by the beauty created by nature and history.

How to Access Uji

The most convenient way to get to Uji is by train.

Two train lines run through Uji: the JR Nara Line and the Keihan Uji Line, so you can easily access it no matter which area of Kyoto you're staying in.

JR Nara Line

From Kyoto Station to Uji Station, it takes about 20 minutes by rapid train. This route is convenient if you're staying around Kyoto Station.

Keihan Railway

On the other hand, if you're staying in the Gion or Kawaramachi area, I recommend using the Keihan Railway. Take the express train bound for Chushojima from Gion-Shijo Station, change to the Uji Line, and you'll arrive in Uji. If you're staying in Osaka, head to Chushojima Station from Yodoyabashi Station and change to the Uji Line.

Tourist Spots in Uji

Now, let me introduce the historical landmarks and spots where you can enjoy nature in Uji.

Historical Landmarks

Byodoin Temple

Byodoin Temple is a World Heritage site representing Uji. It's the temple featured on the design of the 10 yen coin. Built in 1052, this temple is characterized by its symmetrical beautiful building.

Especially the main hall called "Phoenix Hall" is spectacular. I remember being breathless at its elegance when I first saw the Phoenix Hall during my student days.

Also, don't miss the garden that shows different expressions in each season. Particularly the autumn scenery colored with autumn leaves was like a painting and moving.

Furthermore, the museum housing national treasure-class cultural properties is a must-see, and you can't help but feel the depth of Japanese history. Byodoin Temple can be said to be the highlight of Uji sightseeing.

Ujikami Shrine

Source: Wikipedia

Ujikami Shrine is a venerable shrine also registered as a World Heritage site. It's said to have been founded in the Heian period over a thousand years ago and is the oldest shrine architecture in the world.

Unlike the dynamic impression of Byodoin Temple, Ujikami Shrine is attractive for its quiet and calm appearance. The moment I stepped into the precincts surrounded by trees, I felt the hustle and bustle of daily life disappear and was enveloped in a sacred atmosphere.

Ujikami Shrine, which has been watching over us for over 1000 years. When you visit, please put your hands together and pray for the safety and health of your journey.

Koushoji Temple

Koshouji Temple is a quiet temple with beautiful stone steps leading to it. In autumn, these steps turn into a "tunnel of autumn leaves," showing breathtaking beauty. When I visited, it was during the most beautiful autumn foliage period, and I remember the fantastical scenery as if I had wandered into another world.

Known as one of Kyoto's best autumn foliage spots, it's still a bit of a hidden gem. If you want to enjoy autumn quietly away from the crowds, Koshoji Temple is the perfect place.

Mimurotoji Temple

Mimurotoji Temple is a venerable temple built in the 8th century. It's attractive for its beautiful garden and flowers of each season, especially famous for its hydrangeas and azaleas.

In June, during the hydrangea season, the precincts are dyed in gradations of purple, blue, and pink.

It's a bit of a walk from Keihan Uji Station, but it's nice that you can enjoy the flowers quietly away from the crowds. Why not enjoy the historical buildings and scenic views while strolling through the garden? It's one of the hidden gems of Uji sightseeing that I hope you'll visit.

The Tale of Genji Museum

The Tale of Genji Museum is an exhibition facility specializing in the classic Japanese literature "The Tale of Genji." Various exhibits related to the story, characters, and background of "The Tale of Genji" are held, allowing you to deeply understand the aristocratic culture of the Heian period over 1000 years ago. For me, as a literature lover, this was one of the highlights of Uji sightseeing.

Through the exhibition, I was once again impressed by the depth of "The Tale of Genji" and the elegant lifestyle of Heian aristocrats. I had a special experience of being immersed in the world of the story as if I had traveled back in time.

I recommend this place not only to literature fans but also to those interested in Kyoto and Japan's classical culture.

Nature and Scenic Spots

Uji River

The Uji River is a beautiful river that flows through the city of Uji. Its clear stream and scenery that changes with the seasons soothe the hearts of visitors. A walking path is developed along the river, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely stroll.

I often walked along the Uji River during my student days. It becomes a spectacular spot especially in spring when cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and in autumn when the autumn leaves are reflected on the water surface.

Cormorant Fishing (Ukai)

Cormorant fishing (Ukai) is a traditional Japanese fishing method that uses cormorant birds to catch fish. This cormorant fishing takes place in Uji every summer, attracting many tourists. More than 1000 years ago, it was enjoyed as entertainment for aristocrats.

Now it's open to tourists, and you can board a boat for a fee on the day. I also have fond memories of boarding a cormorant fishing boat with my friends during my student days. I remember being moved by the fantastical sight of only the torchlight illuminating the river surface in the pitch-dark night.

It's usually held from July 1st to September 30th, and boats can't be reserved and are available on a first-come, first-served basis on the day. If you visit during this season, please experience the beauty of this traditional fishing method.

Uji Bridge

Uji Bridge is a historic bridge spanning the Uji River. The first bridge construction is said to date back to the 7th century, and a wooden bridge with a traditional atmosphere has been cherished for a long time. The current bridge is made of reinforced concrete, but its design retains traces of the old days.

One of its charms is that it's lit up at night, enveloped in a fantastical atmosphere. The view of the Uji River and the townscape of Uji from the bridge is truly spectacular.

Gourmet Food in Uji

Uji is known as a production area of famous tea representing Japan. Its history is said to date back more than 1200 years. The characteristics of Uji tea are, above all, its elegant aroma and rich umami. Compared to other teas, its production volume is relatively small, and cultivation focuses on quality.

Meals and sweets that make use of the flavor of such Uji tea are also the highlight of Uji gourmet food. "Cha-soba" (green tea noodles), which incorporates Uji tea, has an elegant flavor that stimulates the appetite.

Also, sweets like matcha ice cream and matcha parfait have a taste unique to Uji, attracting many tourists. I have fond memories of going to eat matcha parfait with my friends during my student days.

When you visit Uji, please try authentic Uji tea, its sweets and food.

Recommended Gourmet Spots in Uji

Nakamura Tokichi Main Store

Nakamura Tokichi Main Store is a long-established Uji matcha shop. Here, you can enjoy the traditional taste that has been preserved since its establishment. Not only tea but also matcha ice cream and parfait are exquisite.

No reservation is needed, but you may have to wait a bit, so I recommend visiting after exploring places like Byodoin Temple. However, note that it closes early. When you visit Uji, please enjoy this traditional taste.

I recommend it for lunch, but it's often crowded on weekends. However, I think the taste is worth the wait. When you visit Uji, please try authentic cha-soba.

Source: Google Map by カメレオンマン

Byodoin Omotesando is the road you'll definitely pass through when heading to Byodoin Temple from the station. Here, many shops are lined up where you can enjoy tea and eat-and-walk sweets.

It's not unusual to wait for more than 30 minutes at Nakamura Tokichi Main Store or Itohkyuemon, so if you want to enjoy Uji food while saving time on a half-day trip, for example, I recommend enjoying tea or matcha soft serve ice cream while walking along the approach.
