Notable Events in Yanaka for February 2025
In February, many events are held related to Setsubun, a traditional ceremony that drives away evil spirits that enter during seasonal changes. The events are designed for both locals and tourists to participate and enjoy together.
Setsubun events can be enjoyed not only in Yanaka but also in Asakusa, so please visit the locations that interest you.
Setsubun
Setsubun is a traditional Japanese ceremony celebrating seasonal changes. It is celebrated annually around February 3rd, which is said to mark the end of winter and the approach of spring.
In ancient Japan, it was believed that evil spirits and demons would enter during seasonal changes. Therefore, during Setsubun, beans are thrown to ward off evil spirits and invite good fortune. The characteristic chant during bean-throwing is "Oni wa Soto, Fuku wa Uchi" (Demons out, Fortune in).
In recent years, there is also a culture of eating Ehomaki (lucky direction sushi rolls) during Setsubun. It is said that wishes will come true if you eat the roll in silence while facing the designated lucky direction.

Yanaka Spring Events 2025
From March to May 2025, Yanaka's spring season gradually becomes warmer. In April, the daytime temperature reaches around 17°C (63°F), creating a comfortable climate perfect for outdoor sightseeing.
From late March to late April, cherry blossoms, an iconic symbol of Japanese spring, bloom magnificently, and visitors can enjoy hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in various parks.
Here, I'll introduce various events you can enjoy in Yanaka during spring. Please check each month's event article for detailed access information.
Notable Yanaka Events in March 2025
While March 2025 might be a bit early for full cherry blossoms in Yanaka, depending on the weather, they might reach full bloom in the latter half of March.
Since different cherry blossom varieties bloom at different times, weeping cherry blossoms, which bloom earlier, are likely to be enjoyed by the end of March. There are several spots where you can enjoy hanami.
In addition to cherry blossoms, March in Yanaka offers events like antique markets, which you can check out below.

Hanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing)
Hanami is a traditional Japanese spring event where people enjoy viewing cherry blossoms. From late March to late April, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, you can enjoy viewing and photographing them at various spots, including parks, while having meals. Some parks feature illuminated cherry blossoms at night, allowing you to enjoy hanami in a romantic atmosphere. As it gets cold at night, make sure to dress warmly. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom for about one week. Here, I'll introduce recommended hanami spots in Yanaka that you should definitely visit to witness these precious scenes.
Yanaka Cemetery
Yanaka Cemetery features approximately 7,000 graves. Being a cemetery, you can enjoy cherry blossom viewing in a peaceful atmosphere.
The highlight of Yanaka Cemetery's cherry blossoms is the 100-meter-long cherry tree-lined street that extends from beside Jomyoin. The cherry blossoms blooming on both sides of the road create an arch covering the sky, making you feel like you're walking through a pink tunnel. When the petals fall and accumulate on the road, they create a scene that looks like a pink carpet.
I visited when the petals started falling and was able to take photogenic pictures. This spot is recommended for those who want to enjoy hanami at their own pace in a quiet atmosphere.

New Year's Eve at Kan'eiji Temple (Ueno)
Source:Taito City
Kan'eiji Temple, located within Ueno Park, is a temple with 400 years of rich history. As part of the Yanaka Event 2025 celebrations, visitors can experience the New Year's Eve bell ringing ceremony at two locations: the "Jishodo (Time Bell Tower)" and the "Shorodo (Bell Tower)" in front of the Main Hall (Konpon-chudo). Both local residents and tourists are welcome to participate in striking the bell. When participating, take a moment to reflect on the past year while striking the bell, offering prayers for good health and safety in the coming year.
Kan'eiji Temple features numerous historically significant structures, creating an atmosphere of solemnity and reverence. For those who wish to welcome the New Year at a location steeped in history, we highly recommend participating in the New Year's Eve bell-ringing ceremony at Kan'eiji Temple.
